Your Car Looks Good....You Look Good!

We're all starting to feel the economic crunch in some way. Whether its more money at the gas pump, higher utilities or less free "cash" from rampant refinancing at ultra-low rates, we now have to stretch our monthly dollars to go a little bit farther. And despite all of this, we still like our car to look good! We've decided we're going to have to keep it a little longer, so we especially want it to look good for the duration. We're attached to our vehicles. They become a part of us and how they look is a reflection of ourselves in our minds. If you doubt this, observe the guy going through the mid-life crisis who trades in the minivan for the corvette convertible. We are a people that judge ourselves and others by what we own, sad as that may be. So what can we do to dress up our vehicle to reflect how we feel? Here are some suggestions: 1. Give it a good cleaning first. If you don't want to (or can't because of restrictions of home car washing if you live in a drought state) take it to a good car wash and detail shop. A good full inside and out detailing will probably set you back about 150 bucks. But the result is well worth it. If you want to do it yourself plan on spending about 2 to 3 hours to do a thorough job. If you are limited by a local drought and can't wash your car at home, use one of the do-it-yourself wash bay locations. It will cost about 10 bucks. 2. Once you have it clean or have cleaned it yourself, look at the surfaces. Are there visible scratches, paint chips, dents? Any major scrapes or scratches that will call for paint work? You can get these fixed rather inexpensively, but NOT at a Body Shop. These shops are set up for major insurance work and they will price your minor damage like the insurance company is paying for it! Instead see if you can locate a specialist in this kind of minor damage work. Our shop is designed to do this kind of work and we price it realizing you are paying out of pocket for it and not the insurance company. So the pricing can be as much as 1/3 to 1/2 what a Body Shop will charge. There are also some mobile paint guys out there who can do the work, but be sure of 2 things: first how long have they been doing it? are they any good? and second can they come to you or do you have to go to them when they are working at a local dealership? I've had some customers have work done by a mobile tech and they had to bring it to us to have their work fixed. In other cases, the work by a mobile tech has been fabulous. So check them out first. ( to see our reviews go to kudzu.com). 3. Check the interior surfaces for any damage. Any cigarette(shame on you) burns in the fabric seats? Is the leather damaged, cracked or discolored? how about the carpet? Are your mats deplorable? Just buying a new set of mats can make a world of difference. And it might be worth it to buy mats that are made for your vehicle, either from the dealer or an aftermarket company. They will look and fit better instead of balling up under the pedals and making it difficult to drive as the cheap ones do. If you take the time to take care of the appearance of your vehicle, you will feel better about yourself and you will be surprised how much it will affect your general attitude about life around you. My father taught this lesson to me. He worked hard to provide for us, making sacrifices of what he may have wanted, to provide what we needed. When we were growing up, he never had a new car, but his 1959 Oldsmobile really shined! And when he traded it in on his 1965 Olds, that one always shined too! So even if we go into a recession and times are a little tough and tight for a while, we can still feel good about ourselves. So when you get behind the wheel, IF YOUR CAR LOOKS GOOD.....YOU LOOK GOOD! ...read more

Things to Know Before Turning In Your Leased Vehicle

The time is coming soon when you will have to turn in your leased vehicle. Will it go easy or be a nightmare? If you take the time to prepare beforehand it doesn't need to be a nightmare that costs you needlessly. A few things to remember: 1.   Always check you lease document first. You need to know the terms of the lease that you signed to make sure you comply and there are no hidden costs associated. The biggest concern for most people is the mileage of the vehicle. Are you over or under the mileage allowance? What will it cost me if I am over? The mileage overage cost can often be a lot of money if you have not been monitoring it over the term of the lease. Also you want to read how the lease defines "normal wear and tear". This will be the starting point for examining your vehicle for any excessive "wear and tear" that can cost you dearly if you ignore it before turning it in. Oh, by the way, check and see if you have purchased any gap insurance to cover excess "wear and tear" on the vehicle. This is usually in amounts of $500 to $1000 and it may have proved to be a wise purchase. 2. Once you know what the inspector is going to be looking for, you need to make an HONEST assessment of your vehicle. What are the tires like? O yeah, you are required to turn in the vehicle with decent tires on it, otherwise they'll charge you for them. And they better match the brand you have on the vehicle. Most leases do not allow mismatched tires. Check the body. are there dents and dings that are outside the realm of what is allowable? Any damage to the paint, such as scratches or chips? How about the interior? Tears, rips, cigarette burns? Again, refer to your lease for the acceptable guidelines. 3.  If you are concerned about something, as to whether it will pass or not, you may ask for a pre-inspection a few months prior to the turn-in date. The inspector will usually come to you and right a report letting you know what is not acceptable and what it will cost when you turn in the vehicle.  What I recommend my customers then do is bring their vehicle along with the report and let us determine if something can be fixed for less money to save. Sometimes, the amount they are going to charge you is less than it would normally cost to fix it. Sometimes its cheaper to have it fixed. I had one customer who had a large dent and scratch in her door and they were going to charge her $215.00 against her lease to fix it. I couldn't fix it for less than $400.00. So I told her to let them worry about it.  Another customer had damage to her bumper(common problem on lease turn-ins) and they were going to charge her $450 and we could fix the damage for $225. Needless to say she had us fix it before turning it in and saved $225.00. 4. Very rarely are these items negotiable. You signed the lease agreement and they expect you to live up to it. Its actually quite the profit center for them. Following these guidelines will help you to save money when you turn your vehicle in. Remember, fix only what you have to and nothing more. If you follow these guidelines, you won't have a nightmare, but you'll rest easy knowing you did all you could before turning in your vehicle. ...read more
