The Bridge

The Designer normally uses a combination of images and typography to communicate his client’s message to a potential audience (composed of readers or consumers). The Designer is the bridge between a client and the audience. The Designer must create an image – or images – using photography, illustration and/or fine art coupled with typography that best suits the client’s message. He has learned through schooling and experience how to build a message and present it for the client’s product to succeed. Those images may include product already in production or prototypes for future products. The first job I did working with building a catalog really opened my eyes to the process. The majority of the catalog consisted of prototypes we built in the art department for new product being sold that wasn’t even in production yet. The last 2 sets of prototypes I did were built in the computer, printed out and adhered to blank cartons, as well as completely designed and produced as a photo in the computer. The Designer works with his client to understand exactly what the content and the purpose of the message will be – or what the product will be – and then researches the market to both understand the needs of the audience and the market trend. So if, at the beginning of a new job, your Designer starts asking you a zillion questions, be patient with him or her. He or she is trying to get inside your mind to understand what you are thinking, what you want to say, or the nature of your product so that they can begin to visualize it to create the best message – or package – that suits your needs. The Designer may work with Illustrators, Photographers and Typesetters to create the final designed product. Towards the end of the project the Designer will also work with the printer to see that the files will be compatible and that they will be able to be printed correctly for the job. ...read more

Passion

I LOVE what I do! With the advancements in technology, I have the most wonderful tools to use now that I didn't have 33 years ago when I got into graphic design and printing. I've been drawing and painting as long as I can remember, and although I love fine art, I get a real joy out of creating a package #1 that makes my client happy and #2 that people choose and buy from the store shelf. What a great feeling of accomplishment! And what a great experience over the decades watching the advancements to better and better tools of the trade! ...read more
