How to Compare Tire Prices

We know times are tough, budgets are stretched, and most folks are price shopping. Make sure that when comparing tire prices from different providers, the price you are comparing is "out the door."  Many vendors will appear to be more competitive with their tire prices, because they do not include in their quoted prices necessary costs, including mounting and balancing, valve stems, and state required tire users tax and disposal fees.  This sometimes adds $20-30 more on the top of each tire purchased!  Occasionally, shipping fees also prevent a "bargain" tire from being the best choice. At Bob's Auto Repair, when an official estimate is requested for repairs or tires, our quotes include full disclosure of the entire cost...out the door. ...read more

How Do I Know When I Need Tires?

According to the Consumer Reports Buying Guide 2011:  "You should replace tires before they wear out completely.  When tread depth gets down to 1/8th of an inch, that is the time to go shopping.  You can get a tread depth gauge at an auto parts store for a couple of dollars, but a quarter makes a perfectly acceptable substitute.  Hold the quarter with Washington's head pointed down into the tread.  If the tread is shallow enough to reveal George's hairline, it is time to start shopping.  Of course, if the tires are balding in spots, then you need to replace your tires, pronto.  See failure signs under the Tires section at www.ConsumerReports.org." Consumer Reports has no-nonsense, trust-worthy advice on buying tires, without the sales hype of any manufacturers, since their organization does not accept any advertising sponsorships.  We keep a copy of the guide right by our ordering desk for reference when researching the best tire for the money for our customers.  We do not stock many tires, but prefer to diligently shop for the best price on any given day, and recommend the tire that best suits that customer's individual needs. See our blog on how to compare tire prices! ...read more
