Troubleshooting a Frozen Pond
So your pond has frozen over and an ice cap has formed. All of a sudden, you think about your poor fish under that ice and snow, and you begin to hyperventilate about what you'll find when the weather warms up. Will your pond life, plants and fish, all be dead come spring? Relax, there's some good news as nature has been dealing with winter a long time! Proper Design, Construction, and Maintenance Leads to a Worry-Free Winter If the following items are true for your pond, you don't need to stress about your pond's ability to survive the winter. Did you construct your pond to a proper depth in the ground? If your pond has an area that is sufficiently deep 18-30 inches from the surface dependent upon expected weather) and is dug into the ground, it will be well insulated. The pond's water freezes from the top down and rarely freezes solid. Your fish will be able to swim down to warmer waters and chill out without fear of freezing solid. Often, the water temperatures are around 40°F in the deeper sections of your pond. Did you conduct proper fall maintenance before the temperatures dropped? This means there isn't a whole lot of decaying leaves, muck, and fish food to pollute the water. If you haven't already, make sure you remove this material. If you don't, and the pond stays frozen over it, your fish may suffocate from a lack of oxygen and an overabundance of toxic gasses as microbes process the waste. It may be a lot of work, but worth it come spring and your fish are still healthy. But, I didn't keep a hole in the ice! Won't my fish suffocate? Providing your fish aren't competing with decaying matter, your fish should be fine. The ice cap isn't air-tight. It will allow some gas transfer to occur. Plus, if your pond is of sufficient size, there are oxygen reserves in the water. And, very cold water retains oxygen well. While this ice cap isn't ideal and should be avoided, your fish will survive until you can create a small hole for gas exchange. What do I do? We recommend that you create a small hole in the ice for gas transfer, as soon as possible after the freeze. Do not chisel the hole with a hammer or shovel, the vibrations could cause more damage to your fish than leaving the ice solid. Instead, boil some water and slowly and carefully pour the hot water on the ice until the hole is made. It does not have to be very large. pond boss® is a well-trusted manufacturer of pond maintenance supplies and water treatments.
