It is about an elderly man by the name of Morris Celnikier. He was just 62 years old when his sister admitted him to a care facility. Celnikier’s sister, Vivian Celnikier-Mechabar took her brother to South Florida State Hospital in Pembroke Pines to get some help for him. He suffered from the mental illness known as schizophrenia. Vivian thought her brother was in caring and safe hands. Little did she know that her brother was going to endure pain. Mental health technician, Debra Judge-Thomas is facing elderly neglect charges after Pembroke Pines Police reported that she abused Morris Celnikier at South Florida State Hospital. She disobeyed her supervisor’s order and closed Celnikier in a dark room by himself refusing to let him out. This act of elderly abuse took place on December 2, 2013. Judge-Thomas was supposed to be providing Celnikier with one-on-one care. She was not caring at all. After informing her supervisor that he was hitting her and that he agreed to be taking to a “Comfort Room” to calm down, Judge-Thomas grabbed Celnikier by his shirt collar and left him in a room with no lights alone for up to 45 minutes. The Pembroke Pines Police’s report stated that Celnikier “started pounding on the door attempting to get out but Judge-Thomas who was sitting outside by the door did not take any action to let him out.” Vivian Celnikier Mechabar said that during the struggle to get out, Celnikier soiled himself and fell off a bed various times hitting his head and back on the concrete. He suffered from broken ribs, a fractured back, and other bruises. Celnikier’s injuries were so serious that Vivan took him out of South Florida State Hospital in Pembroke Pines and had him stay in several other hospitals and nursing homes to help him recuperate. Unfortunately, he died in March from choking. Vivian Celnikier-Machabar is angry at Judge-Thomas and she said that she is considering legal action against the South Florida State Hospital. She said that she trusted the hospital staff to take care of her brother while he was admitted there and they failed her. She went on to say, “If they would have taken the care of him that they were supposed to have given him, it wouldn’t have come to this.” It is sad to hear of such a terrible story.
