We have had many clients writing to us saying that their migration failed and the site is completely down at the moment seeking help from us to solve the issue. We would rather migrate the site once again than solving the error that they got. We have listed the migration mistakes that our clients had made while migrating their Joomla site to AWS. 1. Not properly checking system requirements before migrating. System requirement should be checked before migrating the Joomla site to AWS. AWS EC2 instance support php versions from 5.3 till 7.1 we would always recommend using the latest stable release (php7.1) which means your Joomla site should be compatible with the same. 2. Not upgrading the version of the site or the theme purchase. The hosting environment on old and new may differ. The old hosting environment may have running outdated softwares which may not support on new environment hence this requires an upgrade to support the new hosting environment’s PHP,Apache and MySQL versions. Hence it is always safe to stay updated with respect to the version of your Joomla application whenever there is a release. 3. Not using maintenance page on the site during migration. There are site owners who just migrate a high traffic site without a maintenance page this will result in users signing up during the migration process hence the data migrated over to new server may miss the new users this would need to be migrated separately resulting in double work and a lot of confusion taking so much time in exporting and importing user data as well as their order information. 4. Not having a proper backup during and before the migration. Backups are always a life saver when it comes to computers. It is always recommended that we have a daily backup for the site. The data backed up during migration process may miss few important files during the migration process and that might result in website’s malfunctioning. Hence, it is recommended to have proper backup in place. Before we migrate the data over to AWS(Amazon Web Services). 5. Not cleaning up Malicious content during migration. Many clients opt for migration because their site is infected and their hosting company would not want to host their site. At this point we should cleanup the malware content before bringing it to new server. We should check for any malware alert in sucri.com and Google’s webmaster tools to ensure that the site is clean before migrating to AWS. Even AWS will monitor for malware and suspend the accounts if our server is hosting them. 6. Checking for MySQL database server information and changing them accordingly. If you are/were using external database server for your Joomla site you would not be using localhost as the MySQL server name. Hence the site will try to fetch the same MySQL external server(which may not be accessible) from our new server. So, you should find MySQL server entries on all the files present in you Joomla installation and change it to AWS RDS’s end point. 7. Not making use of AWS RDS instance. Amazon Web service’s Relational Database Service is most recommended when you are having a high traffic site. AWS Aurora RDS instance supports upto 15 read replicas which you can make use for your website’s read queries. 8. Make use of Elastic load balancer.
