Not only are you prematurely aging your skin (i.e., brown spots, crepey skin) but you're putting yourself at risk for skin cancer. The Archives of Dermatology recently reported that 2 patients who dried their nails under UV lights regularly (once a week or less) developed skin cancers on their fingers. However, for women who are in a higher risk category because of genetic mutations or family history, a new study reveals MRI screening to be an invaluable tool in finding these genetic mutations. It is the presence of BRCA gene mutations that produce the high risk for breast cancer in women. The new study revealed that the MRI revealed cancer 66.7% of the time in women with the BRCA mutation, versus 25% of the time with mammogram. MRIs are costly and also produce enough false positive readings as to make it less worthwhile for the low to average risk patient. For those who have the BRCA mutation, however, yearly MRI scans can be a life saver. ...read more
