Balance Your Pool Chemicals

Hello all you pool lovers. Since this is my first blog post I’ll keep it basic. And since I’m keeping it basic I’ll start with the most basic pool info that you need to know. How To Balance Your Pool ChemicalsThere are three basic aspects of your pool’s chemistry that you need to be concerned with. They are:1. Chlorine Level2. pH Level3. AlkalinitySo we’ll start withchlorine. Put simply, chlorine kills algae and keeps your pool blue. So your pool needs chlorine in order to look pretty. But how much chlorine do you need? Ideally your pool’s chlorine level should be between 1.0 – 3.0 ppm. Keeping your chlorine level in this range is best because it is high enough to prevent algae growth and also low enough to prevent your hair from turning white if you jump in the water!Chlorine levels should be tested every day or at least every week for all residential pools. The amount of chlorine that you need to add to maintain a reading between 1.0 – 3.0 will vary depending on the size of your pool and the temperature (summer = more chlorine). As a very general rule 1 3″ chlorine tablet or 1.5 gallons of liquid chlorine per week should do the job.Next up is thepHlevel. pH measures how basic or acidic your pool is. Ideally you want the pH level of your pool to match that of the human eye which is 7.2 – 7.4. This level helps maximize the effectiveness of the chlorine and also minimizes the burning sensation in your eyes when you go swimming.A low pH level can be raised by adding sodium bicarbonate to your pool. It is best to add a little bit at a time and retest the water to see how much effect it has on your pH level. A high pH can be lowered by adding muriatic acid. Again it is best to add a bit at a time (say a half gallon or so) and retest the water before adding more.pH should be tested whenever you test the chlorine levels in your pool.Alkalinityis up next. Alkalinity ties in with the overall pH level of the pool as it measures the amount of bicarbonate there is in a pool. The alkalinity level in the pool should be somewhere between 80-120 ppm. Keeping the alkalinity within this range is very easy to do and will help stabilize the pH level of the pool.Since alkalinity levels mostly fall over time, it is rare to have to worry about having too high of an alkalinity level. The alkalinity level of your pool is also much more stable than your chlorine level, so it is not necessary to test it quite as often (once every two weeks should be more than enough). If alkalinity is too low, simply add sodium bicarbonate gradually over the course of a few days, frequently retesting the levels as you add more to your pool.So there you have it. The basics you need to maintain a clear blue swimming pool via chemicals. That’s it for now but I’ll be back with more info. D.E Filters Need Love Too

Okay so I got a call today from a lady who said her pool was green and her filter need to be cleaned. No problem I’m on my way. However there was a problem. There is usually a problem. “I have a DE filter.” she told me. DE or diatomaceuos earth filters are, in my experience, a pain in the behind. There are benefits to having a DE filter as opposed to a standard cartridge filter. They can filter out particles as small as 3-5 microns versus 25-100 microns for the cartridge filter. And a new, fully functioning DE filter system is relatively easy to maintain. But you see the key words here are “new” and “fully functioning” which as far as DE filters are concerned are an endangered species. So I arrive at her house, pry the metal band off the filter and open it up to see whats going on. It wasn’t pretty. Mounds of DE clogging everything up and mixed together with the green algae. This was not a big suprise. As I mentioned fully functional DE filters are easy to maintian. Generally you can just adjust the valve to backwash mode, turn on the pump and wash it clean. Add some fresh DE and the filter is good to go. But most DE filters, including this one, are not fully functional these days. The backwash valve no longer worked so in order to clean the filter I had to take off the metal band, pop the top and pull out the whole setup. But who wants to do that right? Nobody. So as DE filters age and valves stop working, people generally stop washing them. Some advice from the Aqua Doctor. If you choose not to clean out your DE filter, do not add more DE to it! This will result in the pileup pictured above and can put serious strain on your motor. Your filter will also stop filtering algae and your pool will turn into a green mess. So what is a pool owner with a DE filter to do? Save up some cash and have a cartridge filter system installed. You will save money in the long run on chemicals and pool pump motor maintenance. If you do choose to hang on to your DE filter however, I strongly urge you to check it regularly for broken valves or rusted parts that no longer function and replace them accordingly. Even if you are able to backwash your system properly, you will want to pull the filter apart and wash everything out the hard way every six months or so. This will also give you a chance to inspect the filter grids for holes and replace them as needed. Well that’s it for now. Thanks for reading my blog.
