Greening the restaurant and hospitality industry

It is still very surprising that the majority of foodservice businesses, schools and hospitals still cling to polystyrene, commonly called styrofoam containers to serve beverages and food.   After a three night stay in a local hospital recentlyand seeing the use of styrofoam cups it became forcefully clear to me the need for spreading awareness on the negative environmental impact that styrofoam has on our landfills, clogging our waterways and polluting the earth. Polystrene is a crude oil based product which after disposed remains unaltered in a landfill for over 300 years.  In other words it cannot be broken down and reabsorbed back to  a natural state hence pollutes the environment.  Various research has also shown where styrene and benzene as products in polystyrene are toxic and carcenogenic especially as in the case of these chemicals leaching into hot beverages served in styrofoam containers.Unfortunately the immediate cost benefit of styrofoam containers are more attractive to business owners over the biodegradable alternative bagasse, made from a naturally and easily renewable resource sugarcane.  Bagasse and cornstarch based food containers are increasing in popularity on the west coast where "eco-consumerism" is on the rise however efforts are lacking in the south.   Obviously in these hard economic times businesses are forced to stay with the cheaper option as environmental perogatives often succumb to economic gain.  When calculating the cost of environmental preservation, this has to be done over the long term which essentially is a lot cheaper than dealing with damage control in years to come.Businesses that continue to use styrofoam containers need to listen to their environmental conscience and start making the changes today for future generations.  Learn more atwww.biogreen-pak.com ...read more
