That’s the headline of an HP ad running in a trade publications. It goes on to say, “With a HP printer, only original HP Ink has been proven to work every time. 72% of cheap ink cartridges failed when tested. Only Original HP ink cartridges delivered superior quality – 100% of the time.” We selloriginal HP toners and ink. We also sellandrecommendtoners and inksthat cost a lot less than original HP products. Do we agree with HP’s claim? To a small extent, “yes” but to a larger extent “no.” Let’s take closer look. All non-branded ink is cheaper than HP. Is the “cheap ink” in the HP Headline referring to all compatible and remanufactured toners and inks? I doubt it but let’s look at all alternatives. Remanufactured Inks (Remans) re-use empty cartridges and some of the internal parts with new ink added. They cost the least to produce and are the cheapest replacement products you can buy. They also have the highest failure rate in the industry. Remans are probably the “cheap ink” HP is referring to in its ads. I used to work for a company that produced and sold remans and our failure rate never approached 72%. It never approached 22%. Still it was a lot higher than either compatibles or OEM products. If HP says the products they tested failed 72% of the time, I believe them. However, it is unlikely that this figure would be accurate for reputable remans. Compatible Ink Products from reputable manufacturers have a defect rate of from 1-5%. Many OEM companies, like HP, do not manufacture their ink cartridges. They contract it out. Often, they use compatible manufacturers and it is not uncommon for an OEM and a compatible to be produced at the same time and in the same batch. In these cases, the OEM would have the same failure rate as the compatible, not zero and not 72% – most likely around 3%. We have sold thousands of HP Brand cartridges. Some were defective. I simply don’t believe that any reasonable quantity of any cartridge brand will have zero defects. There are some very low quality re manufacturers. And we’ve seen major problems with batches of popular compatible cartridges – mostly from China. The defect rate from these sources could occasionally be as high as 72%. HP cartridge are very good, as are all of the compatibles we sell. HP’s add is misleading and gives numbers tha are exaggerated. Most importantly, I find it hard to believe that any business purchaser would keep buying defective toner no matter how much of a bargain it was. So, no one will ever experience a 70% failure rate. However, even 10% should be intolerable and will wipe out the savings from buying cheap ink. I strongly recommend that you always try a compatible from a reputable distributor, if one is available (and it usually will be). It’s simply a better value.
