Pensacola's Bayou Chico is ready for growth
Bayou Chico is just to the west of Downtown Pensacola, Florida. In olden times there were chemical plants that dumped into the bayou which made it lifeless and the local name for it was Bayou "Stinko". After many years of cleanup and attention, this is no longer the case and, with the coming of the new downtown Maritime Park with it's base ball field and waterfront location, economic growth is now spreading towards Bayou Chico. Bayou Chico is the only sheltered deepwater channel in the area. Marinas were naturally attracted to it's deep channel and protected waters that had previously been home to a shipbuilding operation that began in 1918. Industy included a shipyard, fuel storage terminals, sawmill, and chemical operations until the 1950's when yacht marina's were constructed and the bayou started changing it's economic composition. Today the bayou waters are clean, the terminals and other pollution causing enterprises are gone, and, with the economic rise of the historic Pensacola area, poised to soar to new heights with marina and residential accomdations. In the past few months Penacola was named as one of the top 25 places to retire to, Airbus announced a new assembly plant less than an hour to the west in Mobile, and Pensacola Beach recieved its 20 story big "wheel", one of nonly 2 in the Country.
