4 years later the after hurricane effect on trees

These past weeks or should I say the last couple of months I was amazed by the number of water oaks that have been breaking due to water damage and uprooting, most of the phone calls that I have received were water oaks, and that made me wonder if this is a cyclical issue, byproduct of the hurricane 4 years ago or maybe is just that the trees here in central Florida have reached their age and now are more susceptible to breakage? Does any one have any input on this subject? ...read more

Sources of Information about Trees Spider Mites

Spider mites are a common pest that infests plants and trees. However, these tiny creatures are not considered insects, but are actually arachnids. Spider mites live in a sort of colony on plants and may only be cause for alarm if the colony is of high population.  These massive colonies can cause visible damage to leaves as they begin to turn yellow or brown and drop off.  Unlike some tree killing pests, spider mites can also infest other plants in the garden and the yard, infesting many kinds of trees and ornamental shrubs. Yet, these microscopic invaders are fairly easy to spot. Also called "webspinning mites", spider mites make webs much like spiders do, giving away their presence.  As spider mite colonies increase and continue to feed on the cells of the leaves, light spots appear as stippling occurs.  These spots grow and take on a bronze color as the mites spread and feed on the tree.  Though spider mites may not destroy an entire tree, if the weather conditions are ideal there may be a significant amount of dead or fallen foliage and webbing. To prevent loss of foliage and the declined health of your trees and plants, it is important to control spider mites before they reproduce. Female mites lay their eggs on leaves that remain green throughout the winter or may burrow under bark scales in colder climates.  However, controlling the spread of spider mites is fairly easy to do. Controlling Spider Mites  •    At the first sign of spider mite spray your plants with water from a high-pressure hose. This simple procedure will eliminate spider mites effectively as long as they haven't laid eggs. •    Carefully inspect all purchased for spider mites Introducing spider mites to your property will not only effect the health of the plant your bought, but spider mites are known to travel to other plants nearby. •    Spraying pesticides on spider mites will only work if you use a pesticide specifically designed for their control. •    If water spraying or pesticides are not effective, remove any infested plants or trees from your property to prevent spreading. •    Have a professional arborist or tree service inspect any plants or trees you may think are infested.  Tree experts are often better at controlling such pests than average homeowners.  ...read more

Dutch Elm Disease

If you live in the Eastern part of the United States you may have heard of - and possible seen - the effects of Dutch elm disease.  Dutch elm disease is a wilt fungus that grows in the sapwood of elm trees.  This fungal infection is devastating to trees, most specifically and species of elm tree.  This tree disease started its reign in Cleveland, Ohio in the early 1900s and has since spread to the Eastern coast and as far south as Texas and Florida.  What you may not know is that Dutch elm disease does not only affect Dutch elms, as the same suggests, but all species of elm trees. If you have elm trees on your property, such as white elms or Florida elms, keep a close eye on any signs that  your trees have contracted Dutch elm disease.  The aggressive disease quickly infects trees and spreads to ther elms in the area, leaving behind a path of lifeless trees.  If you do spot signs of this vicious disease, contact a professional arborist as soon as possible to stop the disease from killing your trees. How To Spot Dutch Elm Disease The disease is usually spread by two kinds of beetles which feed on the trees. The tiny fungal spores are transferred from one tree to the next as the beetles feed on the bark.  These beetles are hard to spot because they tunnel under the bark.  A good way to spot Dutch elm disease is in the health of the leaves.  Leaves of infected trees will wilt in the summer.  They usually show signs of yellowing and curling and turn brown. Stay in tune with your local news.  If the disease is prevalent in your area, local news media will inform you of signs of destruction as well as possible tips for treatment. Newspapers may also run stories about Dutch elm disease if an infestation has occured in your area. Controlling Dutch Elm Disease Dutch elm disease can be controlled by tree spraying if spraying is done at the very first sign of infection.  Contact a professional tree service to survey speculative trees to determine if tree spraying is necessary or effective. Regularly prune tree branches and remove dead or decayed branches.  These unhealthy limbs are likely to harbor Dutch elm disease. Be mindful of when to prune - pruning in warm weather can leave trees susceptible to disease if the trees are not able to heal correctly.  In some cases removing limbs or pruning away infected branches can stall or halt the spread of the disease.  Have an experienced tree professional make this decision.  Otherwise, the entire tree will need to be removed and disposed of to ensure the disease does not spread to other trees in the area. Planting trees other than elms can also stop or slow the spread of the disease.  The the American elm is a stately tree with desirable crown growth, you may want to consider planting other types of trees than elms if Dutch elm disease is a problem in your area. ...read more
