Have you got a road trip in your future and want to make sure that your RV is ready for the open highway? There are some things that experienced RV'ers can tell you save them time and money out on the open road. The number one cause of problems on the Open Road is Tires. Tires on RV's usually sit for long periods of time making them susceptible to long periods of intense sunlight and memory issues. The sunlight breaks down the makeup of the tires and can cause premature aging. The solution is to cover your tires with a reflective cover while not in use. The second issue with tires is the air pressure. It is vitally important that you check your air pressure and make sure that the pressure is what it says on the tire. Over inflation will cause the tires to balloon and make the tires more prone to blowouts. Under inflation will increase friction, causing the coach to to be harder to drive and or tow. The increased friction of under inflated tires will lead to premature wear and tear and also can cause the hubs and bearings to become damaged. The Second Thing that is a must is your brakes and braking system. Have you ever been driving your car and pushed down on the brakes only to feel the pedal go all the way to the floor and you could not stop. That is one of the scariest things in the world. Now imagine having this happen while driving a 40' Motorhome or pulling a 32' Travel Trailer 70 mph down the highway and there is a traffic jamb ahead and you have to stop. Always check out your brakes and brake system before you head out on the road. Adjusting brakes and making sure that the brake fluid is topped off is something that takes just a few minutes but will save your life and the lives of all those traveling around you on the road. The Last Thing I Always Check is the Fluids. Oil, Transmission Fluid, Power Steering Fluid, and Radiator Coolant/Antifreeze. Here in Florida we seldom have to use the antifreeze characteristic of radiator fluids. But, we always use the coolant characteristic. Driving in central Florida in the Summer is very taxing on your engine. Temperatures may reach 100 degrees outside and your engine will need every drop of coolant it can use to stay operating efficiently. Have your radiator flushed and filled if you see rusty water in the reservoir. Rust in the coolant system can clog up the tiny tubes in the radiator and decrease your radiators capacity to cool your engine. Engine Oil should be changed regularly and topped off before hitting the road. Transmission Fluids should be checked and topped off.
