Prescription Drug Abuse Summit In Orlando

The country's first Prescription Drug Abuse Summit praised Florida's new prescription drug database, but conceded that more work needs to be done in the fight against prescription drug abuse. The Summit began yesterday in Orlando. "Florida could not handle (the epidemic) alone, nor could Kentucky," said Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear. More than 700 law enforcement officers, physicians, pharmacists and addiction counselors joined Beshear, the U.S. Surgeon General and two members of Congress to brainstorm about how to continue fighting the problem of prescription drug abuse across the United States. "We are one with this battle...It's not going to be done by one person or one sector of government," said U.S. Representative Nick Rahall of West Virginia. Both Kentucky and West Virginia are waging their own battles against the effects of prescription drug abuse in their states. "No one should share their prescription drugs with another, even if you have the best intentions," said U.S. Surgeon General Regina Benjamin, a former family physician in rural Alabama. It took three years for Florida's drug monitoring program to start. To date, almost 6,000 medical professionals registered for the database and checked patient drug histories more than 106,000 times. Despite initial resistance from Florida Governor Rick Scott, the program has helped to close 213 illegal pill mills and arrest 34 physicians across the state. ...read more
