Max Wrigley and the Incredible Chewing Catastrophe (www.MaxWrigley.com) Maxwell Wrigley’s life is a mess: Trampled on by his older sister at home, picked on by the school bully “Goose” Gooseman, and misunderstood by his preoccupied parents.  His one hope is to win the Science Fair and escape to the Milhaus Academy, a special magnet school for science smarties.  His epic diorama, Chewtopia, may be just the ticket: a solar- powered world of toy trains and bubble gum figurines, including Bite Mountain, the world’s first mechanical bubble-gum blower… But sabotage by Goose on the day of the fair ruins Maxwell’s chances, and destroys Chewtopia.  That’s when Dr. Straussheim, the wise old prefect of Milhaus Academy, takes Max aside and gives him a very special gift: a magical magnifying glass that – much to Max’s surprise – transports him into Chewtopia, along with Goose and the neighborhood tomboy Josephine (Joey). Now, inside his own diorama, Maxwell discovers a fairy-tale world of science and heroism – but a world in trouble.  Goose’s real-world bullying has left a dark stain on idyllic Chewtopia, creating an evil villain, Hangerin: a living blob of gum stuck to a giant sneaker in a dark mountain range called the Trashlands.  Together with a pint-sized pencil-top troll and a legion of wind-up teeth, Hangerin has terrorized the friendly gum-people, kidnapping them to work as slaves excavating Bite Mountain!  He plots to move its gum- chewing jaws to the Trashlands, where he can blow a giant helium-bubble and escape from his prison to rule Chewtopia forever!  Maxwell must team up with Jackaby, the boldest of gum-adventurers, his gum-dog Howler, and a team of half-chewed misfits to stop Hangerin – and reach the giant magnifying glass, his only way home. But just like in the real world, bullies get in the way.  Ever the jock, Goose undermines Max’s brains-over-brawn plan so he can be the big hero instead.  Maxwell winds up captured and face-to-face with Hangerin, the biggest bully of them all.  Hangerin, as clever as he is evil, sweet-talks Max, playing on his feelings of isolation to milk Max for the secret to the Bite Mountain Jaws, ensuring his ultimate victory.  Maxwell discovers Hangerin’s motives too late, and only a daring rescue by Jackaby can free him. Now it’s up to Max to stop the Jaws before his friends get chewed – by standing up to Goose and showing the gum-folks that they can stand up for themselves against Hangerin.  When the dust settles from an all-out fight – kids, gum-folk, and a giant parakeet against Hangerin, an army of wind-up teeth, and evil, octopus-like “octoblobs” – the good guys have won, and Max has faced his fears.  He can stand up to anything now. And once he returns to the real world, things have changed.  Max wins the Science Fair but turns down the chance to attend the Milhaus Academy magnet school.  After all, science is everywhere, and he’s not afraid of bullies or sports any more.  As for Chewtopia and the magnifying glass – are things really finished?  Can Maxwell get back in?  Who knows?  But he knows for sure that there’s a lifetime of exploring ahead. ...read more
