For some it's Christmas in July now that President Obama has signed the Car Allowance Rebate System into effect. The new credit gives an allowance UP TO $4,500 for those who trade in their old cars and trucks for more fuel efficient models. But as we have learned from past credits we can't go get in line just yet. First we have to determine if we qualify. Those of us in my office who own older cars rushed to check out this credit since we were ready to shop! Surprisingly, not a single person owned a car with a mileage rating of 18 miles a gallon or less. That's a combined rate and if you use the government website www.fueleconomy.gov you will be able to quickly find out your mileage rate. Just input the year, the make and model and you will get the listing of both city and highway ratings as well as the combined rating. If you do pass the less than 18 miles per gallon rating then the next few items will be simple. Is it registered? Have you owned it at least one year? Has it been insured for that year? Is it drivable? Now go shopping! Note though that since it is mandated that the car you turn in has to be destroyed, remember the credit exists as a "green" effort to encourage more fuel efficient cars, then you won't be receiving any "trade-in" value. Your trade-in value is the credit. Also, the car purchase must be between July 1 and November 1, 2009,the new car purchased cannot exceed $45,000 and you cannot trade in a car for a motorcycle. The voucher amount available to you is determined at the dealership so it is not something you have to get pre-approval for in advance.
