PROTECT YOUR PLANTS FROM THE COLD!

Did you know that most tropical plants in SWFL start showing freeze damage around  43 degrees?! What can you do to protect your plants from the cold weather?  Pay attention to the weather reports, and if the weather is predicted to be 43 degrees or under follow our helpful hints below: When possible, be sure to soak the plants heavily during the day when the temperature is at its warmest.  If you are not able to soak the plants during the day time hours, be sure to soak the ground AND NOT THE FOILAGE as soon as you can.  If the foilage is still wet when the temperature drops past 40 degrees the water will freeze and will cause damage.  When possible, cover your plant material with cloth material.  ***NEVER USE PLASTIC TO COVER YOUR PLANTS!*** (Plastic causes condensation to accumulate and will actually cause more damage to your plants than if you were to do nothing at all!) In the photo above, our Garden Center uses mirifi cloth (frost cloth) to protect our inventory.  If you do not have access to mirifi cloth, you can use any cloth material such as bed sheets to cover your plants for a freeze.  If you are not able to cover the entire plant (foilage and all) be sure to soak the ground/base of the plant and cover the base of the plant with cloth material.  This will ensure the roots keep warm during the freeze, and help the plant survive. If cold weather is expected to last longer than one night, use your judgement as to keeping your plants covered during the duration. ( Here at Wizzard Services, we tend to keep our plants covered for the duration due to our large inventory-it can take an entire dayandour entire crew to prepare for cold weather. )  ***If you can uncover your plants when the sun is up the next day and the temperature has gone up, it is a good idea to let your plants get as much sun as possible.***  (Just be sure to cover them again before nightfall when the temperatures drop.) Finally, make sure to shut your sprinkler or irrigation systems off (including drip irrigation for pots)  if they normally run at night.  If your system is left on during this weather, it could kill your plants almost overnight.   If you do notice your plants have sustained frost damage, keep in mind thatMOSTtropical plantswillrecover.  Try to avoid heavily trimming any plant during the colder frosty months, as it will freeze any new growth and the main plant and could cause irrepairable damage.  It is wise to wait until the frosty weather is over before heavily trimming your plants/trees.   If you ever have any questions or concerns about your landscaping, feel free to contact our Garden Center staff at 239-597-4414  where we would be happy to help.  ...read more
