Observing Productivity Patterns One method of maintaining productivity and decreasing substandard products is observation.Watch for patterns in production rates. When a pattern is visible, corrolate it to what else is going on in that time frame. Have the employees been at the same work station for long periods? Does the drop come after breaks or lunches? Are specific days of the week less productive? There is a saying that when buying a new car, don’t buy one made on Monday or Friday.Finding the patterns is one thing. How to effect change and maintain moral is another. Involve the employees (or employee). Show them the pattern and ask for their imput. Many production and assembly jobs are boring!Ask your personnel how you can make their job better. Listen to what they have to say, and show openness to their suggestions. Most importantly, DO NOT asssign blame or threaten disciplinary action! That approach will add stress to an already stressfull situation and will not bring the desired result. Of course this is assuming that the patterns are not caused by poor work habits.The hiring of a third party to interact with the employees is often a good idea. Your employees are more likely to give truthful answers and less likely to suggest the solutions they think you are after.
