If you’ve recently been diagnosed with cancer, it can be a frightening time in your life as you make decisions on topics such as treatment plans. If you have been diagnosed with cancer affecting the prostate or bladder, you are in luck, as you may be able to see urologists in Miami that are familiar with high-intensity focused ultrasound, or HIFU. This method of cancer treatment has shown to have some degree of success over the years, but it does not work with all kinds of cancer. What HIFU Is HIFU uses high frequency sound waves to kill cancer cells. However, it does not pass through air or solid bone, which is why it only works on some types of cancer. The waves will kill the cells that it focuses directly onto, and it is used to treat a single tumor or a small part of a larger tumor. However, it cannot be used to treat more widespread tumors, so people who have had cancer spread throughout their bodies would not be eligible for this treatment. Avoiding and Diagnosing Cancer Getting an early diagnosis is the best chance for fighting cancer, in part because it will make you more likely to be a candidate for high-intensity focused ultrasound and also because it will increase the chances that doctors can get the cancer out, even if they don’t use HIFU to do so. Early detection includes getting routine checkups with your doctor as well as knowing your body well enough to be able to tell when something is off. There are other ways to prevent various types of cancer, so avoid increased exposure to cancer-causing agents. Finding the Right Treatment There are other methods of treating various cancers that may work better for specific cases, and methods that may work for patients who cannot have HIFU treatments for one reason or another. When you are exploring your options, it is wise to get opinions from multiple doctors as well as research treatment options from reputable sources in order to decide what option may be best for you. Ultimately, your oncologist, which is the doctor that treats cancer, should have the best knowledge and advice on how to proceed. Be sure that you are using a reputable oncologist either by following your regular doctor’s recommendations or by reviewing them to make sure that they have a good history with their patients.
