The Basics of Billboard Design

Have you ever turned around just to jot down the phone number from the billboard you passed? Me neither. That’s why it’s so important as advertisers and marketers to create interest in a short amount of time. Billboard design is a medium of its own and requires specific tools and practices to effectively harness its marketing power. We’ve compiled our resources and racked our brains to come up with the seven best practices of billboard design.  1. USE THE AGE OLDKISS RULE (KEEP IT SIMPLE, STUPID) Relax, I’m not calling you stupid. Multiple sources stick to this rule: Use seven words or less. No one is going to slow down to read your paragraph of text. That’s an accident waiting to happen. This also means only including important information on the billboard. According to Jon of Insight Marketing Design,”Chances of someone writing or remembering a phone number on a billboard are infinitely small. Don’t clutter your message with information that won’t be used.” 2.  CREATE EMOTION “Emotional voltage ensures memorability. And that kind of voltage demands eye-grabbing, emotional images that work with and are reinforced by succinct, powerful copy. When raw emotional power isn’t an option, thought provoking (but easily grasped) concepts and images help to ensure people remember the way the message was communicated. And of course, daring, innovative ideas can ensure your billboard advertising isn’t just noticed, but recalled at the golden moment when the prospect is ready to buy” (Design My Billboard). Say what? Big words aside, this means to confront the driver with something they can connect with…and if all else fails, use humor (see rule 6). 3.  SIZE DOES MATTER Clearly. Since billboards need to be easily seen and understood by drivers, a great rule of thumb is to use bold, large text that is at least 18′ tall. Drivers will not take the time to decipher tiny words. 4.  KEEP COLOR IN MIND Statistically, the best color combination is a yellow background with black text. “Yellow stands for caution and we are conditioned to automatically pay attention to anything that is yellow especially while driving” (Urvashi Pokharna). See our chart below for the best color combinations (Information courtesy of Buzzle): 5.  STICK WITH YOUR BRAND Duh! Did we mention we’re a branding agency? This is the kicker for people like us. Creative billboards need to reflect your brand’s personality and aesthetic. Be consistent with your other branding materials, using similar fonts and colors. You can also use this in conjunction with other print advertisement campaigns. 6.  HUMOR = RETENTION The best billboard marketing campaigns use a sense of humor. This engages drivers and makes your ad campaign the topic of Saturday’s dinner party. 7.  PROVIDE A CALL TO ACTION Your goal is to create a desire for your product by giving your audience a small taste of your product or service. Sometimes less is more — if you peak their interest, they will pursue  more information on your product or service. Calls to action include: “Subscribe to our blog!”“Be nice. Like us on Facebook.” Read more about this topic:ZCorum: Best Practices for Billboard DesignComstor Outdoor: Design TipsTop 10 Billboard Design Tips45 Creative Billboard DesignsBillboard Design Rules That the Pros Sometimes Forget ...read more

Niche Business and Search Engine Optimization

Your website, your online business, and the use of search engine optimization will be key in businesses today. Ria Nancoo CEO, Network Handlers stated, “I firmly believe the market today is unlike any we’ve seen in a long time, if ever.” It’s almost a zero-sum market in which many niche markets are saturated and success involves taking something away from a competitor. This kind of market resembles retail, where most niches are also filled and securing a place for your product or brand may mean displacing another on the store shelf. However, there is still a niche in theonline marketing business. This is because small business sales are not just limited to the local and national market anymore. In other words if you are a Hat Maker in Iowa, your hats can easily sell and reach the European market through search engine optimization. ...read more
