Women and motorcycles!

Women and motorcycles!   As you all know that there are more and more women riding motorcycles. This has been getting more main stream the last 6 to 7 years and setting up bikes for them can be a challenge. We have been setting up and building bikes for women from the very beginning. Way back in 1973 Christi Oakley the co founder of motorcycle clinic was a very avid rider and over the years we had built her quite a few bikes. We have found that women are very different than men (in case you haven’t noticed) when it comes to building or setting up a bike for them. We have had a lot of experience with women over the years, and what we notice most of all is that a lot of times it is that whoever is working on the bike is not listening to her! What I mean is when a woman says something is not right with her bike I have found that 90% of the time she is right just no one listens to find the problem. When a woman comes in and has a problem with a cretin aspect of her bike the way it is set up, or the way it handles, or rides I can’t get on the bike and recreate the problem, because we are not the same. She rides different than men do, she sits on the bike different than a man, and she even has a different point of view than a man. So the only way to get to her problem is to ask the right questions in a language she can understand and listen to her answers and understand what she is relating to problem. I have found that women have a very different way of expressing problems and what is going on with the bike. We have been doing this for a long time and the one most outstanding thing about a woman riding a motorcycle is it gives us new challenges and renewed vision about how we think about bike set up. Everything from the way the clutch and throttle, seat position, foot peg location, to even the compound of the brake pads effect even the smallest aspect of the bike through the eyes of a women!  So I would like to say thanks to all the women riders, and to those who have become or customers, and to those who will become our customers in the future you riding bikes only make us better at what we do, Thank You. So if any of you women riders need a place to listen, and hear you, and understand what your needs are we are here to help you, and you can bring your other half also we got then figured out too! The Importance Of Proper Maintenance On Your Motorcycle

The Importance Of Proper Maintenance On Your Motorcycle     What are the basic self safety checks that you should do to your motorcycle before every ride?   1.    Tire pressure- Lack of proper tire pressure is one of the most commonly overlooked areas of your motorcycle. This can cause front end wobble, uneven and excessive tire wear as well as poor handling. Many if not all of these symptoms may be prevented with the proper tire pressure alone. You may wonder what the correct tire pressure for your particular motorcycle is. This is found on the side wall of every tire. It will have a max tire pressure; typically you will want to run 4psi less than the max pressure. This will allow the tire to expand due to the natural expansion of heated air. In most cases we recommend to run 36psi on front and rear tires on most standard cruisers and sport bikes. On larger motorcycle such as Goldwings and Harley Dressers we recommend to run 41psi on front and rear tires. If you want to make sure of the pressure, ride your motorcycle at highway speed for at least 30 minutes and the tire pressure should not raise more than 4psi from your start point. Keeping proper tire pressure will help prolong tire wear and get the most mileage out of your tires in turn saving you $.     2.     Oil level- The oil level should also be checked at least once a week. The proper technique for checking the oil level is to have somebody help you and stand the bike straight up. At this point all bikes have two ways to check the level. One way is through a clear sight glass near the bottom of the engine case or through a dipstick. The level on the clear sight glass should be to the top line of the sight glass. If there is a dipstick, you will want to oil level to the top mark on the dipstick one again with the bike standing straight and on a level surface. These oil checking techniques can also be found in your owners manual that is available for every motorcycle.     3.    Lights- Lights should be checked every time you ride your bike. Not making sure your lights are working properly could be a deadly mistake. Unfortunately us bikers do not have the luxury of be surrounded by a lot of metal (cars) to protect us and make us more visible. So when we ride we have to be seen as much as possibleSO MAKE SURE YOUR LIGHTS ARE WORKING PROPERLY! This includes checking your taillight, turn signals, headlights and brake lights. Make sure your brake light is working properly when you use both front brake lever as well as the rear brake pedal.     These are just a few of the many safety inspections that should be performed on any motorcycle before heading out on the road. If at any point you do not feel comfortable with these safety checks, it is highly recommended that you take your motorcycle in to a professional shop and make sure that the proper checks are done to ensure your safety and the safety of everyone else on the road.  ...read more
