In 2006 I hit rock bottom, again. I had been to a couple other rehabs in the past, and for what ever reason I continued to hit the streets. I was in dire straits when I called the hotline, and within 24 hours, I was on a plane to Jacksonville. I got more help there with the caring and knowledgeable staff than I had in the past. I believe this place is a life saver, and I would recommend it to anyone! Eight years later I am still grateful for my time there. Lakeview, keep up the good work! The only suggest I have is to personally vet any aftercare programs suggested. Through no fault of Lakeview I had a rather bad experience in my aftercare, but in spite of that, this coming September I will celebrate 9 years! ...read more

The implications of Health Care Reform for addiction treatment

If there is there an issue of the day more contentious or complicated than health care reform, I don't know about it.  Regulating the financial sector and fixing the economy?  Child's play in comparison, at least in my humble opinion.  At any rate, while pundits, analysts and the public as a whole are slowly digesting the wide and complex ramifications of the health care bill passed yesterday by Congress – and evidently destined to be signed into law by President Obama in a matter of days – certain aspects of the bill's impact on the mental and behavioral health  sector are being scrutinized and talked about by professionals in the field and the occasional journalist. Psychiatric Times came out with a piece before HR 3590 and HR 4874 were passed by a razor thin majority about the likely impact of Democratic health care reform on the practice, costs and funding of mental health treatment, including drug and alcohol treatment: "Extending Mental Health Coverage: What the House and Senate Have in Mind" The long and short of it is that health care reform will include mental health care coverage for many currently uninsured Americans set to become eligible for expanded Medicaid benefits or federally sponsored health insurance.  It would appear that these folks will have access to addiction treatment services as well, although to what financial extent is unclear. Of course, as is usually the case, the devil is in the details, and the changes this legislation will effect are going to be involved and far-reaching. ...read more
