Not only is Becky kind, she is a wonderful seamstress- The only person to trust with your wedding dress in Jacksonville!!!! Don't make the same mistake I did by going to Deerwood Alterations: Luckily I went with my gut and left with my dress after the second appt, before they had a chance to really ruin it. Becky is a lifesaver! She handled the fixes beautifully and did amazing work with the delicate material of my dress. ...read more

How much time is needed for wedding gown alterations?

Most wedding gowns require approximately 2-3 months for alterations. The more alterations needed, the more time needed.xml version='1.0' encoding='%SOUP-ENCODING%' Hems: Most gowns need hemming. ·Lace with beading takes the most time to hem. The edge of the lace needs to be removed and then hand stitched back on at the appropriate length for the bride. ·Any hem that has beading or any other kind of embellishments will also take a substantial amount of time. ·Many hems that are made of satin have the lining attached together at the bottom. These also take a while to hem. All the top stitching on the underneath side needs to be removed stitch by stitch. ·Most wedding gowns have an attached crinoline which also needs to be hemmed. Often several layers can be hemmed where they attach to each other. Some attach to the lining to far up and need to be hemmed separately. ·Most destination gowns have 3-4 layers which all have to be hemmed separately. Most are chiffon and take longer than other fabrics to hem. Bodices: bead work takes many hours to take off the gown and then to re-sew back on the gown properly. ·Heavily beaded gowns need the most time to alter. All the beads need to be removed where altering, then sewn and the beads stitched back on individually creating the same design that was original to the gown. ·Gowns with a beaded netting overlay take a substantial amount of time as well. The netting needs to be removed, the gown taken in and then the netting resized and replaced. ·Any gown that has beads on the top edge will have to have those beads removed from bust seam through the back seam. Once the sided are taken in and re-angled, then the beads are re-stitched on to look exactly as the original edge. ·Taking in the heavily beaded or embellished bust seams take the most time. As with all alterations with beading, the beads/embellishments must first be removed, then dress taken in and then the beads/embellishments re-sewn. ·Gowns that have no beading or embellishments take much less time but still require a couple of fittings. Bustles: if only a bustle is needed then a shorter time frame is required. If other alterations are needed as well as the bustle then the 2-3 month time frame would be required. ·Most gowns require a 3 or 5 point bustle. If the gown only requires a bustle, 2-3 weeks is all the time required. ·Some gowns only require a 1 point bustle and if that is the only alteration required then 2-3 weeks is all the time required. ·If there are more than 5 points needed, then we would need more time. 3-4 weeks. There are many other alterations unique for each wedding gown and should only be altered by a seamstress experienced with altering them. They are more involved than most any other garment. ...read more

Becky's Story

Becky is a 3rd generation seamstress who started sewing when she was three years old.  As the story goes, her mother was sewing and Becky was getting in her way wanting to see what she was doing.  Her mother threaded a needle, gave her some material and said go make some doll clothes.  She did!  She sewed the material right on the dolls! :)  By the time Becky was six to seven years old she was sewing with a sewing machine.  All through school she always made her own clothes and would help classmates in home ec. Throughout the years after graduating, she would sew often for friends having babies, getting married or many other occasions as well as for herself and her family. In October of 1998 Becky started her home based alterations business which enabled her to be a stay at home mom.  Her business grew and in 2002 she became the seamstress for a bridal shop that a friend owned, still working out of her home. That is when she started specializing in wedding gown and woman's formalwear alterations. By word of mouth, her business continued to grow and became too big for her home. So in 2005 she opened an alterations shop in the Southside Estates shopping center, continuing to specialize in wedding gown alterations.  Bridal customers would comment that they wished she would start sell wedding gowns and accessories.  After a couple of years, she finally started selling gowns by Forever Yours Bridal, veils and accessories by Bel Aire Bridal and shoes by Colorful Creations. In 2008 she finally outgrew the small alterations shop and moved around the corner to a bigger space in the same shopping center.  In this space she not only continues to do alterations but has also increased the amount of retail items.  Moving into a bigger space also gave opportunity to start taking in consignment gowns and accessories.  Most recently she started renting out tuxedos. ...read more
