The north-central Florida city of Gainesville, along Interstate 75, is probably best known as the home of the University of Florida, which with nearly 52,000 students is one of the largest universities in the nation. Gainesville was founded in 1854 and named for U. S. Army Cmdr. Edmund P. Gaines. Attractions include the Hippodrome State Theatre, the Harn Museum of Art and the Florida Museum of National History.
