25 Breathtaking Wildlife Expeditions #12

Here we are, mid way through our wildlife expedition tour around the globe.  We have visited many remote destinations, while others have beenclose to home.  Today, we are off to the far reaches of our planet again.  We will venture to Nepal, known as one of the richest countries in the world in terms of bio-diversity.  Here you can experience climates from the sub-tropical to the arctic by traveling from a mere 60m at sea level to the highest point on earth, Mt. Everest, at 8,848m.  The vast array of wildlife in this diminutive country is astounding, considering she represents 0.1% of the total earths surface.  Still, Nepal is home to at least 848 species of birds, over 500 species of butterflies and over 4% of the mammals on earth make their homes within her borders. There are many avenues by which you can venture out to see the wildlife in their natural habitat during your visit to Nepal and there are 9 National Parks in which to spend as much time as you please in doing so.  You may choose to venture into the jungles on an elephant's back or in a rugged jeep in order to track the elusive, yet beautiful Royal Bengal Tigers and, on the way, perhaps you will be among those fortunate enough to glimpse the critically endangered Great Asian One Horned Rhinoceros.  There is much debate as to whether future generations will have the pleasure of seeing this animal alive in the wilds at all due to the dwindling populations.  There are many others to fill the lens of your camera throughout your safari so don't dismay.  You are sure to find sloth bears, leopards, gaur, sambar and spotted deer among the critters who cross your path.  Of course, with the multitudes of birds, there will be plenty of color to balance the dark fury coats of these mammals in your photo album. As you venture near rivers you may find yourself lucky (or unlucky) enough to encounter another of Nepal's endangered inhabitants, one of the few remaining  Gharial.  The outlook for this crocodilian reptile is more promising, in recent years, than that of the rhinoceros above.  In Nepal, populations are present and slowly increasing on tributaries of the Ganges in both the Chitwan and Bardia National Parks.  The Chitwan National Park has even been home to some small scale projects to breed and rehabilitate the Gharials. As with most of the wildlife expeditions we have taken a brief tour of herein, there are plenty of delights to be had for any birder on your list.  If you know an avid binocular toting feather gazer, they will be in absolute heaven in Nepal.  You may have trouble getting them back on the plane home before their Visa expires.  A boring moment will never be had in this distant land.  With the majestic backdrop of Mt. Everest, the sub-tropical jungles, and the network of rivers and streams slicing through the countryside, you will never find a dull corner.  If you bore of the solid ground, try your hand at some river rafting or take a canoe for a leisurely camping trip down stream.  Even try your hand at a day of fishing or dolphin watching.  Just remember that all of this beauty is fragile and be gentle with our earth.  Travel Green! ...read more

25 Breathtaking Wildlife Expeditions #10

Perhaps one of the most enjoyable journeys to visit nature in the raw is one that takes place within the boundaries of the United States herself.  People travel from around the globe to visit the frozen tundra of Alaska where we like to believe the Wild West still exists to some extent.  The panorama from boat, train or dog sled is absolutely astounding and the sheer vastness will draw you in and leave you awestruck. One fabulous location to visit, on our quest for a wildlife adventure, is the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.  Established to preserve the herds of caribou, polar bears, grizzly bears, migratory birds such as the peregrine falcon, dall sheep, muskox, wolverines, and many, many other species, this refuge also serves to ensure water quality and quantity in our great north.Currently claiming a diverse population that includes 43 fish species, 37 land mammals, 8 marine mammals, and over 195 bird species, both migratory and resident, the refuge will not disappoint even the most die hard of nature lovers among us.  And the chances of visiting this refuge and going home with your camera empty are nonexistent.  As you travel through this region you will actually have the opportunity to visit five different ecological areas.  Undisturbed lands covered with lagoons, beaches, salt marshes, the tundras of the coastal plain, the alpine tundra and the forest tundra transition, and the boreal forest full of tall spruce, birch and aspen. You may feel as though you have traveled across time when you come upon a herd of Muskoxen grazing on sweet spring grass shoots along the rivers of the open coastal plain.  It is easy to picture these majestic giants feeding alongside a woolly mammoth with their thick, warm coats and their sharp, protective horns.  Yet, not long ago these mammals were reintroduced to this area after a 100 year lapse in residency. For birders, this refuge is a delight like few others.  The variety of birds that find their way to this refuge for the summer months is absolutely phenomenal.  You will be able to complete several missing pages of your journal with just one visit.  I would strongly urge you to bring a sound recording device of some sort as well.  You can never reproduce the song of  a bird in the wild and here, on the refuge, you will have ample opportunity to capture those melodies.  The buff-breasted sandpiper is just one of many unique shore birds that you will have the chance to enjoy during your visit so be sure to bring plenty of memory cards for your camera.  You will not be able to download this stuff fast enough and you don't want to miss the opportunity to catch a peregrine falcon in mid-hunt.There is so much to see and do in the Alaskan wilderness that you could, literally, spend a month there and be left with a wish list to fulfill on your next journey north.  However, by visiting the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge you have gained an insight into just how rich, majestic and historic this great state is and what an awesome part of our country lies just to our north.  Steeped in mystery, perhaps, but yours to discover nonetheless.TRAVEL GREEN! ...read more

25 Breathtaking Wildlife Expeditions #9

At long last we are heading down under.  We all know about the Kangaroo and the Koala because we see them in every zoo we visit here in the States.  What most of us do not realize is that Australia is a giant, vast continent with an enormous variety of ecosystems, very much like the continent that encompasses the U.S., Canada and Mexico.  As such, she also has a range of wildlife species that is much more diverse than we can imagine.  Needless to say, she is well worth several visits and today we are just getting started. Familiarity is not always a bad thing so, as you warm up to the unfamiliar, yet friendly, native land, the area around the Kennett River is a great place for a beginning.  Along with the hiking, surfing, fishing and swimming you will find that this is a great spot for seeing the occasional dolphin pod or Great Southern Right Whales pass by not far from shore.  In the nearby Grey River Reserve you will find ample opportunity to spot kangaroo, koala, lorikeet, king parrots, and kookaburra during a midday trek to the waterfalls along one of many hiking trails.A perfect spot for your next visit will be the Otway Cool Temperate Rainforest where you may have the fortune of spotting one of several endangered species currently being managed in an attempt to prevent their extinction.  Studies are underway on species such as the Tiger Quoll and the Powerful Owl to curtail the effects of logging and other industries that have encroached on and destroyed their habitat.Of course, if birding is on your list of must do items, then Australia is definitely going to be a pleasure trip for you as well.  You will not want to miss Port Campbell National Park and her largely ornithological residents.  You will never turn a boring corner with the collection of honeyeaters, southern emu, fairy wren, swam harriers, rufous bristlebird, peregrine falcons, pelicans, ducks, black swans, egrets, penguins, terns, dotterels, hooded plovers, australasian gannets, wandering albatross and short-tailed shearwaters.  (I am sure you will find many that I have failed to mention here.)  Of course, if birds aren't your only delight, the park has a few other delights for your camera lens as well.  You are sure to pick up a handful of photo ops with a southern brown bandicoot, swamp antichinuse or echidna during your trek along the wooded trails. If you have ever heard the children's rhyme "London Bridge" you will want to be sure to visit this landmark while you are in Australia.  Beware, however, because the bridge has fallen so only the arch remains.  The best part, though, is that you will get to see one of everyone's favorite birds; the penguin.  It's a wonderful way to wrap up your trip to the Victorian area of the great continent of Australia.  Of course you have yet to see the many other wonders of this vast world down under so you have many return trips to book.  Where to go next is just the first of many decisions to make.  Perhaps the Great Barrier Reef is waiting patiently for you and your snorkling equipment?  We just have to wait and see!  Until you decide pleaseTravel Green! ...read more
