Got Stuff to Sell? – Think eBay – Thinking eBay? – Think “INSIDE THE BOX”by Gina Rosenberg Here’s a twist. Instead of the common catch phrase, “Think outside the box”, if you are thinking of selling your stuff on eBay, David Rosenberg AKA "The Internet Guy" says “try thinking inside the box!" If you have stuff in your closet, stuff in your garage, or worse yet, stuff in a storage unit, turn that stuff into extra cash. Sell it on eBay. If you have a computer, a camera and access to the internet you can turn your storage bill into receivables. Here are some ways to think “Inside the Box.” When you think of the ‘stuff” you might have to sell on eBay, keep in mind that the buyer of your “stuff” pays the shipping. Although the buyer has to, it doesn’t mean they want to. So what does this mean? It means that if a buyer can find a particular item locally and not pay shipping, why would they buy it on eBay. Or it may mean, if they are willing to pay the shipping, it is because they would like to get the item for a steal. In either case that is probably not what you as the seller wants to see happen. Another way you should think “Inside the Box.” Do you have the original box? Items sold on eBay in their original box bring more money than items without the box, especially when it comes to collectibles. Not everyone had the forethought (or crystal ball) to know what would someday be collectible. So, those of you who kept the boxes for your Hummels, Nascar Collectibles and even Precious Moments will most likely yield a higher selling price. Another means of thinking “Inside the Box” is determining whether you have items buyers are looking for. A purse with a well known label sells better than one without. If your are selling a “Black Purse” you are competing with 16,000 other listings. A “Black Leather Purse, 5,455 other listings. A Black Leather COACH Purse, 883 listings. You want your item to stand out in the crowd. Think “Inside the Box” for a price. How do you decide how much to ask for your item? Do you think you know what it is worth? Guessing or basing the price on what you paid originally, what you looked up in a price guide, or what a friend told you the item might be worth, are not the most accurate. The Internet Guy suggests that you check on eBay to see what other like items have sold for in the last two weeks. Although eBay is not the be all end all for appraising an items value, he quite often explains to customers that ultimately, things are only worth what a buyer is willing to pay you for them. Think “Inside the Box" for condition. Chipped or damaged items usually mean, don’t bother. Collectors and buyers will generally only buy items in near perfect condition. Think “Inside the Authenticity Box.” Autographed memorabilia and designer purses sell for much higher prices when you have a certificate of authenticity (COA) or an original receipt. If you have a baseball that your GrandDad told you was autographed by Lou Gehrig, it would greatly behoove you to have that authenticated because the difference in selling price will be substantial. Do you want to list your items yourself or enlist the services of an eBay Trading Assistant? If you have a digital camera, a computer, and the time, you may want to try this on your own. If you don’t, or are selling higher ticket items, using a trading assistant can pay for itself in the time it takes you to do the research, determine what is the best format and price to sell your item, write a compelling listing, take quality photos, answer questions of potential buyers, collect payment and pack and ship your item. So, go take a look in your closet, hmmm… a Coach Purse and Lladro Figurines that you grew tired of packing and unpacking each hurricane season. Then take a look in the garage… vintage car parts, tools, electronics. What about your storage unit… a Fender guitar, a snowboard (what were you thinking anyway bringing that with you to FL,) unused exercise equipment (ok, we know what you were thinking there, we all do it.) What are you holding on to that could be worth money? Think inside the box... so you can put it in a shipping box and put some extra cash in your deposit box!
