Furniture Medic by Dream Polishers - Closed

On 9/3/2014, I contacted Dream Polishers, d/b/a/ Furniture Medic to provide an estimate for doing some furniture repairs in Fort Myers. I spoke directly with the owner, Ladonna P. Haywood. As per Ladonna’s request, I sent her pictures which were provided to me by the customer, as part of the claim that was filed. On 9/5/2014, Ladonna provided an exact cost for the agreed upon repairs by email which exactly stated the following: “All repairs can be made on-site in Ft Myers. Cost for the repairs is $647.50 plus $38.85 sales tax = $686.35. Please let us know if you would like to schedule. If so, please send the information for contact and scheduling. We will need a credit card to secure payment.” Based upon the quote provided by Ladonna, I agreed to the charge of $686.35 for these repairs and I provided a credit card as per her request so she can charge this exact amount upon completion of the work. On 9/17/14, I received an email from Ladonna informing me that she had done the repairs, except for one items (an entertainment center) which was part of the original quote, and also informing me that my credit card has been charged $961.95. I immediately called Ladonna and questioned the amount which differs from what was agreed upon, not to mention the fact that allegedly this did not cover all the items that were originally discussed. Ladonna was very rude, very defensive and did not want to listen to anything I was saying. She kept repeating over and over that “they were there all day” and “I only provided you with an estimate and not an exact cost”. I referred her back to her email dated 9/3/14 which stated that the exact cost of the repairs including tax was $686.35. Again, she was only listening to her own voice. I followed up with an email to her asking her to refund the difference back to the credit card, but I never received a reply and no refund has been processed. ...read more

We took an antique oak dresser to them to just have it re-glued and it came back with the original bottom missing & an unfinished piece of plywood screwed into the bottom. What the heck? Asked for a refund and they refused stating that we never told them that the piece was important. Huh? It belongs to us and we are spending the hundreds of dollars to have it re-glued - so it’s important! Why wouldn't a company that we are paying treat everything they have from any customer as important? Find another service if you care anything about your furniture. ...read more

What are you buying in new furniture today????"

In today's new furniture market, the majority of pieces are made in China, Vietnam, Thailand - anywhere but the United States.  It is rare to find SOLID WOOD furniture in the furniture stores.  Most pieces are now made with particleboard and MDF (medium density fiberboard) with veneer or some type of laminate over it.  The veneer is usually very thin too. Finishes are applied usually by machine and a very thin coat.  The finishes tend not to be very durable either. This is true for most, not all, but most - NO MATTER HOW MUCH YOU PAY FOR IT OR FROM WHICH STORE YOU BUY. Your decorative "carved" components are typically made of plastic, not wood. One option is to find an unfinished furniture store.  They typically have pieces for you to see for choices as well as catalogs from which to choose.  They can help you pick pieces to build something you would like to have, i.e. an entertainment center or dining room set.  You can have them finished in the color and finish that you choose. Another option is to have a company that builds furniture custom build your pieces.  This is generally a more expensive route and you do have to be specific about telling them to use "solid wood" components, not plastic, MDF or particleboard. Inspect pieces carefully before you buy.  Look on the back and see where it is made.  Look underneath and see if it is veneer or laminate over particleboard or MDF.  If you pay a lot of money for these pieces, you will want to be able to have them repaired in the event of damage. Acceptable "repair" may be difficult if not impossible to achieve. If you find older furniture available for acquisition, you might want to consider. If you use Yahoo, add to 'My Yahoo" to see our blogs when posted. ...read more
