Walking into this guy's office was the beginning of an absolute nightmare. The guy is basically off in space the whole time, he acts somewhat intimidated by people's problems, and he is literally terrified of conflict; in short he is mostly incapable of competently performing his duties. Really, he amounts to nothing more than a glad-handing yes-man who seeks to enrich himself through his considerable fees, despite offering essentially nothing more than a cheaply decorated office replete with a creepy psychoanalyst eavesdropping, and supplying the occasional nod or pandering query. It is a great place to go if you want to waste cash and have your problems fester, or worse. ...read more

Psychiatry or Psychology Services. What's the difference?

Often when I meet with clients I am struck by the fact that the mental health professions have done so little to educate the public on the difference between services provided by a Psychiatrist vs those of a Psychologist. So I thought I would write a little piece for purposes of public edification. You need to be good consumers of your physical AND mental health care so let's begin with an understanding of who's treating you and specifically how they are treating you. Individuals who are suffering from psychological distress which interferes with their day to day functioning have the option of addressing their symptoms from either a primarily medical model or a primary biopsychosocial model. The experts of the former model are known as Psychiatrists. The experts of the latter model are known as Psychologists. You'll notice in both cases I use the term "primarily" because in the real world very little can be reduced to an either/or dichotomy. When you are interested in a medical approach to your symptoms you are essentially seeking to rely upon a drug or chemical based solution to your psychological distress. In contrast, when you are interested in  a biopsychosocial solution to the resolution of your suffering you have instead a desire to empower yourself to discover the broad array of  life tools at your disposal that you can develop in order to learn self-regulation in a complex world. Again you would go to a Psychiatrist for the former and a Psychologist for the latter. As can  be seen, these two knowledgeable disciplines approach mental health from two very different and distinct points on the proverbial elephant. Neither can be judged as right or wrong per se, only different. It's up to the consumer to determine what approach he/she is ready for. Chemical intervention is probably generally perceived as easier and more convenient (minus any drug side effects of course). In contrast, examining one's life from both an internal and external perspective for the purpose of gaining mastery of one's world can often be perceived as a more daunting and perhaps as such, less desirable approach. The prerequisite for the latter assumes that the individual is strong enough, courageous enough and autonomous enough to trust in the ability of their unconscious to guide them towards a more satisfactory experience of life without reliance on a substance to liberate them from psychological suffering. With the distinctions drawn, as I mentioned earlier things are not always clear cut in real life. The truth is, while the approaches are different in their emphasis, often the tools of each can be complementary indeed. It cannot be denied that basic physiological stabilization is for some a necessary prerequisite for a biopsychosocial treatment  approach to be optimally effective. In such cases Psychologists are then in the position of working collaboratively with Psychiatrists to facilitate a foundationally firm nervous system before the teaching of self-mastery tools can commence. Likewise it is well known by Psychiatrists that medication treatment will not effectively treat certain symptoms of psychological distress. At such times Psychiatrists will refer their clients to Psychologists for the most efficacious solution to their distress. My point is, consumers need to better understand precisely what these two disciplines do to ameliorate psychological distress. Only then can one make an informed decision about the optimal treatment protocol for themselves. It is my hope that this short little piece has accomplished it's goal of empowering the consumer of mental health services through just a little bit of education.     Sincerely, Jennie L.
