Most drowning occur in less than five minute, a trip to the bathroom , or a knock at the door, leaves enough time for a child to go wandering. Before you know it the child could be in the pool and so little time has laps. A child will lose consciousness two minutes after submersion, with irreversible brain damage occurring within four to six minutes. Never let your guard down, drownings peak the highest in the months April -September and during the weekdays of Saturday, Sunday and Monday when people have let there guard down because of days off. Let's not forget about holidays when the house is full of people and someone thinks someone else is watch the child. Losing a child is a horrible and takes a emotional and financial toll on a family. A near drowning leaves as many as 20 percent of near-drowning survivors suffer severe, permanent neurological disability. The financial toll for typical medical costs for a near-drowning victim can range from $75,000 for initial treatment to $180,000 a year for long-term care. A single near-drowning that results in brain injury can be more than $4.5 million. No one device or solution can prevent all childhood drownings. but a multilevel strategy, including active adult supervision, pool fence, window and door alarms, proper water safety education is required to ensure childrens safety in and around water.
