About Bethany Beach, DE
Bethany Beach, a town in Sussex County along the Atlantic Ocean, is known as one of Delaware's "Quiet Resorts." With all the fun shopping and recreation amenities of a seaside town, Bethany Beach also retains a relaxed feeling, especially due to its proximity to state parks. The large oceanside resort of Sea Colony is a major employer. Students attend Sussex County Public Schools. At the entrance to the town stands a unique totem pole statue, dedicated to Chief Little Owl. Sculptor Peter Wolf Toth donated the original statue as part of his project to honor Native Americans with artwork placed in all 50 states. After the original and a replacement were damaged by exposure to the elements, the sculptor created the present statue. Other attractions are the Bethany Beach shopping district, the surf of the Atlantic Ocean, shell collecting and walking along the beach, and visiting the Nature Center and Conservation Area. Every summer, the Seaside Craft Show brings the creations of juried artists to the area. The town got its name through a contest won by H.C. Alkinson, who received some land as a prize.
