Homeless & Disabled Veterans

Getting people to recognise the needs of the Homeless Disabled Veterans. Trying to find a way to help them get RVs to get them off the streets and into something like a home. Where they can have privacy and get out of the weather. Next step is to get them the basics. And to get feedback on opening closed military bases to give the Homeless Disabled Veterans (both employable and unemployable) a more permenant solution to their homelessness without gouging them for mortagages and money they don't have. (Please follow the Link below, read for yourself, Join the Group and help us get this off the ground to give Veterans back their pride) Homes on Wheels for Veterans http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=123262966012&ref=nf http://my.barackobama.com/page/community/blog/amyelder ...read more

Power Down - Dream Big

For the past 14 years we, Center for SCREEN-TIME Awareness, has promoted (TV) Turnoff Week here in the US and around the world. There are millions of people who participate every year and some come to the realization that a little less screened media in their lives gives them a bit of their life back. According to researchers around the world, more people are spending more time with screened media (television, computer, games, iPods, cell phones) that at anytime in history. Partly that is because many of these devices are still new to many, but the other is that they are designed to hold our attention for hours and hours and are easier to deal with, in many ways, than people are. This devotion to electronic gadgetry has made us more solitary and sedentary and has led to a growing obesity crisis around the world. India, China, France and the USA are facing populations with growing waistlines and shortened attention spans. We have seen on a global level a diminishing sense of empathy, as over exposure to visual images makes us use to things that only a number of years ago would have outraged us. Studies have shown that individuals that spend excessive time with screened media are more likely to smoke, use drugs, engage in risky sexual activity and live in dysfunctional families than those who do not. Children's grades suffer, health suffers and quality of life is diminished. TURNOFF WEEK is a time when people can reassess their relationships with the screens in their lives. We are talking about recreational use of screens, not suggesting that you stop working (if you use a computer). If you can go for one week with no television, no recreational use of the computer, no electronic games or videos...see what you are doing to fill that time, notice how you feel, experience how the movement of time changes and stress levels drop. TURNOFF WEEK 2008 runs from April 21-27, but you can do it any time and for as long as you want. We view this as a celebration leading to Universal-Screen-Time-Reduction, when we start living our lives in real time, in real space with real people. Other programs we are working on include Searching for America's Fittest Schools and Wellness in America, as well as A Lifestyle for the 21st Century. Some of these are pilot efforts, others are ready to be spread far and wide. If you are at all intrigued, want to see if you could go an entire week without a screen, join us at www.screentime.org or call 202-333-9220 Robert Kesten Center for SCREEN-TIME Awareness ...read more
