Uptown Theatre

4.0

The Uptown theater is THE PLACE to see a movie with outdoor or wide-scope scenery. I saw Star Wars there five times, once laying on the floor! Platoon and Apocolypse Now would not have been the same in any other theater. If only I could have seen Crimson Tide there. *sigh* I have seen the Harry Potter movies there with my son, who at 17 is now an Uptown addict. I've never been disappointed with a balcony seat. The only thing missing is IMAX, but I can go to the Air & Space museum or out to the 'burbs for that if I must. I love the Uptown!!! ...read more

Uptown may not be among DC's most up-to-date theaters (without stadium seating, 3D-capable screen, and other modern additions), but what it lacks in amenities it makes up for in character. This historic single-screen venue has hosted Hollywood premiers such as "2001: A Space Odyssey" and "Dances with Wolves" and today generally plays action/sci-fiction type films. Despite its small lobby and sometimes long lines, it still draws a considerable crowd that cheers and claps and creates a congenial / communal atmosphere often absent from large, anonymous theaters. Take the metro and arrive early enough to secure a good seat. If you're short, the ones in wheel-chair accessible row (with more leg room) near the back are a good choice. ...read more

Uptown Theatre

There are good things about the Uptown - great sound, nice balcony. But none of this makes up for the terrible screen. Yes, it is huge, but huge screens are easy to find in the age of IMAX. The Uptown's screen is an Panavision screen from the 1960's, and there hasn't been a film released in Panavision for decades. Panavision films were meant to be projected on large, curved screens to produce an immersive experience, but when you project modern films, which are meant to be shown on flat screens, the picture becomes distorted, with all objects comically stretched the further they are from the center of the picture. The theater also has no light baffles - when the door to the lobby is opened, the light from outside washes out the screen. ...read more

Family Guy - What is this TV show all about?

In the earlier the days when people talked about TV animation shows, they immediately thought about Walt Disney cartoon characters for children, like Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse. Later on a duck named Daffy and Tom and Jerry also became very popular. However, for the past two decades television animation shows like the The Simpsons and Family Guy have changed the whole scenario. These highly popular shows are meant for adults rather than children. Apart from The Simpsons, there have been other shows like the South Park, Futurama,  Family Guy which are specifically created for an adult audience. We can safely say that the Disney and Hanna Barbara cartoon shows have given way to modern animated sitcoms. The jokes and comic situations in the show generally focus upon politically incorrect musings and the extent of humor of these politically incorrect musings are, the popular the show becomes. An animated show relatively fewer boundaries and it can experiment with a lot of characters and situations which is simply not possible for a show with real actors. Family Guy show is a perfect example of the new model of television animated shows. The show was created by Seth Macfarlane for the Fox Broadcasting Company and till now the show has won three Primetime Emmy Awards, three Annie awards and one Golden Reel Award. Family Guy was first shown on TV in the year 1999 and it has completed many seasons since then. Family Guy is set up in a fictional town called Quahog, Rhode Island. The show revolves around a superficially normal family but under the surface it is totally sick and dysfunctional. Peter is the main character of the show and he is a drunken man of Irish descent. Lois Griffin is the attractive wife and they have three children Chris, Meg and baby Stewie. They also own a talking dog, Brian. Chris is not unlike his father and suffers from obesity and low IQ. Meg is always trying to be more and more popular with her peers but never succeeds in doing so. The baby Stewie is always trying to dominate and control the world and sometimes even thinking about killing his unsuspecting, naïve mother, Lois. Brian is the talking dog owned by the Griffin family, who sips martinis and attempts to deal with serious issues in life. In the Griffin family there are plenty of such issues, so Brian has a never ending supply of topics to deal with. All in all  Family Guy is a very entertaining to show to enjoy with the whole family, and WatchFamilyGuyHQ.com is a great website to watch Family Guy online. ...read more
