On Wednesday, CityStar Group, Inc. filed its first patent applications with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) to protect its search engine's unique features and functionality. The company's proprietary software is utilized exclusively by CityStar's 303 local city directory websites and the International Business Directory at www.citystar.com. The system was created by CityStar between March 9, 1997 and April 15, 1997, and was first demonstrated publicly on October 13, 1999 on CityStar's home page. During its development, several distinctive functions were added, such as wildcard database entries, the ability to search for several keywords or phrases simultaneously by inserting commas between each, and the ability to display relatively large screenshots of each website in its search results. In subsequent years following the script's creation, many clever embellishments were added through formatting of search engine results page (SERP) templates, adding specialized fields to the system's databases, inserting external filenames in certain fields, and so forth. However, the search program itself has stood the text of time, and remains unchanged. We have found it to be extremely fast, scaleable, adaptable and accurate. During the years 2002 through 2007, as CityStar expanded beyond its initial service area in Colorado to serve 21 countries, additional software was developed to streamline the management of its network of sites.
