Junk Removal for Seniors

We've all seen it... the retirement planning checklist. Things that include a Will, Financial Power of Attorney, Medical Power of Attorney, Health Insurance, Life Insurance, Long Term Care, ect. The one thing no one talks about is all of your stuff! What are we going to to do with all of the lifelong possessions in the attic, garage, and basement? This is often an emotional subject for family members, but something that should not be avoided. There are reasons to start the conversations with friends and family sooner rather than later. The choice to start the discussion about significance of certain items and then begin to remove other belonging will prove beneficial in any circumstance. Lets look briefly at a few examples: 1. Choosing to stay in the home. Starting now to remove the unwanted clutter will help create a safe and comfortable home in retirement. At some point, as we get older we can no longer complete the required maintenance to the home. So we have to call a professional. A clean and clear home will allow a professional to come in a service the furnace, the electrical or the plumbing with ease and convenience. We may also require easier access to entry ways, bathtubs and other rooms. The more we eliminate now, the less trouble it will be when changes to your home occur. 2. Downsizing to another home. Anyone who has ever moved knows how stressful and time consuming the task is. The less stuff we have to move the easier and less costly it will be. When in doubt, throw it out! You are not throwing out the memories, just the unwanted items that take up too much space. 3. Moving into a retirement facility. Sometimes the transition to a retirement home is not expected and can be tragic and emotional due to illness or accident. By choosing early what is most important, and acknowledging which items bring you the most joy, the stress of sorting through everything during an already emotional time is reduced. 4. Moving in with children. By having conversations with family members about the importance of your treasured items, family members will get a clear understanding and value the history and family heritage. Many children will welcome these treasured belongings into their homes and then pass them on to their children. All the rest of the "stuff" can be easily separated and given away or sold. There is no single answer as to what to do with all your stuff when planning for retirement. However, it is something that can be discussed and planned for. Everyone has a different idea of what retirement will look like. One thing that everyone can do is talk about it! As a a clutter removal specialist with a large dump truck, my job is to help remove the clutter in a quick, painless and cost efficient manner. In one day we help you make progress that you can see!
