Everybody likes trophies, especially little kids, so when I volunteer I always let my parents know that no matter what, we're getting hardware at the end of the season. Chalkboards are becoming more popular in home decorating these days. You see them integrated in new kitchen designs in trendy home designer blogs and magazines. There is something about having a charcoal black board with a fancy frame as a highlight in your decor. Although they do have aesthetic appeal, chalkboards do have some disadvantages. Before you choose a chalkboard for your home, we wanted to describe some of the reasons why a whiteboard might be the better choice. Asthma and Allergies One of the biggest concerns to consider before you install a chalkboard or use chalkboard paint in your home are the affects of chalk dust on a family member who suffers from asthma. Chalk dust has been found to be associated with increased respiratory symptoms, school absences and medication for asthmatic children. Particulate air pollution is any substance capable of staying suspended in air and entering the respiratory system. Children are the most sensitive to particulate pollution since they can receive an increased dose to their lungs compared to adults. Since a child breathes faster and their lung capacity is much smaller than an adult's, the amount of chalk dust particulates that could be deposited in the child's lung climbs significantly higher with each breath.According to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma&Immunology (AAAAI)chalk dust is recognizedas one of the irritants that could trigger asthma and allergy attacks, including coughing, wheezing, rashes and eye irritation. It could be right next to your refrigerator or in front of a classroom, but chalk dust gets everywhere. It's on your hands, your clothes, and on the floor- it's even still on the board after you erase it. Sure, cleaning it up isn't a huge deal, but is it really worth it? Let's take it a step further and think about all the appliances and electronics that you use in your home. Not only does chalk dust hang around in the air, it accumulates on everything. From your coffee marker to your television, cooling fans suck chalk dust in, and accumulation of particles on any device̢۪s inner workings can increase chances of overheating and decrease its lifespan. This issue is one reason why more and more schools are replacing their chalkboardswith whiteboards- with ever-shrinking budgets, schools don't have the resources to replace computers, projectors and DVD players whose lives were shortened by chalk dust. Research studies consistently show that dark text on a plain (or light) background allows people to skim the information faster and increases comprehension. Tests show that most people can read black text on a white background up to thirty-two percent fastercompared to skimming or reading light text on a dark background. In general, the greater the contrast between the text and background, the easier the information is to scan or read.
