I have a senior move management business, we assist seniors and their families with the daunting task of moving. I have seen people who have discussed this and have prepared for it and I have also seen to many times people who waited until it was an emergency situation and had to move in a hurry ( many times we have had to move them in one day). The one's who were prepared did not experience the trauma of moving as severely as the ones who did not. Relocation Stress Syndrome is a real illness and has been known to even cause death. I agree that people in their 70's should take a good look at their situation and prepare for the next decade. If their family home is large and the maintenance is becoming a burden then maybe it is a good time to look into a smaller dwelling. It could be a condo or mobile home. One reason I believe it is a good idea to trickle down to a smaller home is for number 1, you start that downsizing process when you are younger,( which is the hardest part of a move for seniors, emotionally and physically) and 2 when you move into a home that has less maintenance your quality of life might be better, saving money as well because the cost's to keep a large home are higher. Then as you get into your eighties you might be better prepared and in a better position to make the decision if it is better to stay and get outside help or move in to a community. ...read more

The best way to tackle a closet is to go through everything and think to yourself "have I worn this in the last year?" If the answer is no then give the item to charity or if it's really nice and is in good shape you may want to consider putting it on consignment. You can make money or you could get some new items. But remember if you get a new item get rid of an old one. If you start to downsize a little at a time it will make your life not only more simplified it will also make moving to a smaller dwelling so much easier when the time comes. ...read more
