Security Threats Defined: Security threats are a constant problem in the world of computing, regardless of which operating system you use. It’s essential to keep security threats to a minimum by using up-to-date antivirus software and being vigilant when surfing the Internet or installing software from sources which you are unsure of. Security threats come in many different forms from the mildly annoying to the extremely harmful. Following is an overview of some of the most common forms of security threat. Adware: Adware is one of the lesser security threats and, rather than being a true threat, it’s often more of an annoyance. Regardless, adware should be avoided and uninstalled in order to keep your computer running optimally and safely. The purpose of adware is, as the name suggests, to advertise, rather than to actually offer anything of use to the end user. Some adware is malicious, especially that which is automatically installed without your permission. Other adware is installed alongside a regular program as a way to support the production of that software. Many Internet browser toolbars are a form of adware. Spyware: Spyware, as the name suggests, is software designed to spy on your computer-related and online activities without your knowledge. Spyware can be fairly harmless, merely tracking your browsing data for marketing purposes. On the other hand, spyware of certain types can be used to record keystrokes, passwords and much more. Spyware of any kind should be removed immediately as it can pose a major security risk. Virus: Computers viruses work in a similar way to biological viruses, hence their name. A virus is a malicious piece of coding which attaches itself to (“infects”) other files on your computer and spreads. Viruses are usually designed for the sole purpose of being destructive. In terms of severity, viruses can be relatively harmless pranks or they can be devastating, destroying your data and, in some cases, even damaging your hardware. Viruses should always be removed and regularly scanning your computer with antivirus software is highly recommended. Worms are similar to viruses, though they work alone rather than infecting other files. Trojans: Trojans are a type of malicious software. They are composed of two parts – a client and a server. The client component of the Trojan is installed on the victim’s computer while the server, used by the remote hacker, is used to access the client, allowing the hacker to control the computer. Trojans can therefore be used to record keystrokes, change settings or even install additional malicious software on your computer. Antivirus&Security Software: While a number of publishers have free versions of their retail security software available for download, we don’t recommend using any of them in the long term. Free versions are typically watered down versions of the retail package and are often used as a marketing tool to get you to purchase the full version. While a full retail version of popular software might set you back up to 60.00 per year for a single system, it’s still quite a bit cheaper than having to spend the money to repair a system that’s been infected. If your system does not currently have an antivirus application installed and you either need time to research the best solution or you can’t currently afford the cost, you should install a free title until you are ready to upgrade. We have tested numerous free versions of popular titles and have foundMicrosoft Security Essentialsto be the best free solution available. When searching for an antivirus solution, you need to be familiar with the term bloatware. Many of the titles currently available are considered to be bloatware and often take over valuable system resources causing your computer to run slow and sluggish. It’s important to find software that provides optimum protection while taking up the least amount of system resources. After years of installing every security software title known to man across thousands of different computer systems, we have finally located software that we feel comfortable recommending. TheESET Smart Security 5suite will protect your system against all of the security threats mentioned above and it also includes a great software firewall for your system too. The program is not bloatware, so it doesn’t bog down your system and it does a great job at catching viruses in the wild. These are new viruses and threats that aren’t yet detected by antivirus definitions. Infection Removal: If you think your system has been compromised, it should be scanned for threats immediately with the proper virus removal tools. We recommend shutting the system down andcontacting us immediately for further directions. While we can definitely recommend preventative measures that help reduce your risk of infection, we must insist that you do not attempt to remove any infections on your own. Continued use of your system at the onset of an infection will usually allow the infection to spread making it increasingly complicated to remove.
