Watts are (VA) volt amperes, and convert to amperes.
Watts are amps.;why the circuit breaker may be tripping.by Alan Story on Wednesday, August 31, 2011 at 11:39am You can understand this, but you need to read this little bit of information first. Name Plate Data;Appliances, instruments, equipment, etc. have Name Plates or other printed descriptions of their power consumption also know as the load being added to the circuit. There will be nominal values for voltage, watts or (amperes aka amps. which are watts expressed differently), and other values and information.Your power source voltage will vary depending on variables like how far you are from the local power source transformer and how much load you and all other users on the local transformer are using which will change or fluctuate and follow a trend for your areas users through out each day. So using your homes power source in the following example and knowing typically that your voltage should be somewhere from 110 volts to 125 volts per line and it fluctuates depending on what capacity is being consumed through the transformer.Receptacles typically are labeled (125 volts max.) and (250 volts max.).Most homes today have two 120 volt power lines where each line is distributed in 15 and 20 ampere circuits for duplex receptacle and lighting outlets. The two power lines are used together to provide a 240 volt power source for some appliances you may have like; Range, Dryer, Air Conditioner, etc.For one power line or single phase 120 volts calculations we use a nominal value of 120 volts. For two power lines or single phase 220 volts calculations we may use nominal values of 220, 230, or 240 volts depending on the Name Plate.Example converting watts to amperes:When the value is expressed in watts and you want to know amperes.Consider a 100 watt light bulb. Divide the watts by the voltage. 100w / 120v = 0.833333 amperes or amps. of load at 120 volts of power. Now, if your duplex receptacle outlets are on a 20 ampere circuit, typically the circuit will trip with-in a + or - 5% value of the circuit breaker amperage value..05 X 20 = 1 ampere. So the circuit breaker could trip anywhere between 19 and 21 amperes. A kitchen typically has a microwave at 12.5 amperes or more, a refrigerator that fluctuates between 6 and 10 amperes, a toaster about 10 amperes, a coffee maker about 10 amperes, and other appliances; so you can add up some of these and understand why the circuit breaker trips when the wrong combination of appliance loads are on at the same time. Some appliances installation instructions and Name Plates require a dedicated Specialty Appliance circuit that has nothing else plugged into or tapped off of it. National Electrical Codeis the law and says that a circuit may not use more than 80% of the circuit breaker value if a load is continuous for three hours or more. NEC is minimum requirements for safety..08 X 20 = 16 amperes. Load managementcan happen on purpose, but usually happens by accident. People sometimes learn that they can't plug in so may things on a circuit at the same time even if they didn't do the math. People either learn to manage loads on their existing circuits or install Specialty Circuits to allow them to keep additional loads plugged in. ...read more
