5 simple things should eliminate the rouge mover. 1. Do they have an actual physical location such as an office or warehouse, clearly printed on their paperwork and cards? If not, you will never find them if you need to contact them about any problem. 2. Do they have the proper PUC license for California moves or the DOT license for interstate moves? You can only get help from these agencies if they have the power to fine or suspend a license holder. 3. Do they require a deposit? Most movers will not ask for one unless it an unusual circumstance.(Heck, we have your things. That is a pretty good deposit) 4. Will they come out and give you an in home, written, not to exceed estimate with a list of items going, not going, and what each party will pack? (Remember the first commandment- If it is not in writing, it did not happen.) 5. Will they accept credit cards? If all else fails, your credit card company will step in to resolve and refund disputed charges after the fact. The rouge movers know this, and since you can not use the small claims or municipal court system in California to sue a mover on an interstate job, the bad guys can get away with overcharging as long as they get cash or cashier check only.
