I’m pretty active in the gym and work out regularly doing strength training, but I wanted to try something different to add more cardio and conditioning to my routine…hence, that’s when I found ILKB with a limited special offer they had for 3 days with free gloves! Kickboxing alone was totally out of my element, but after the first day, I was already hooked and signed up for a 7-month membership! Why I believe this place is awesome: 1. The classes are incredible workouts! You start with a warm up with a variety of butt-kicking exercises to loosen up (jogging, burpees, squats, lunges, push ups, ab work, high knees, etc.). At this point, everyone is already breaking out in a sweat! Then it’s followed by stretching to prevent injury. After, it’s actual bag work where you punch and kick to burn off calories..drenching in even more sweat. Then, there’s partner drills where you meet a new friend and workout together. It’s then concluded by stretching and cooling down. When it’s all done, you leave with a full body workout and feeling like a bad@$&! 2. Their team of coaches are amazing! They are welcoming, motivating, supportive, and challenge you to get out of your comfort zone and be a better you! They guide you every step of the way with each instruction/movement/technique…and everyone can participate at their own pace, but yet still feel challenged. Their passion, enthusiasm, and energy is contagious…and it makes the class fun, enjoyable, and addicting! 3. They have a variety of different class schedules throughout the day, so you can attend a class that fits your schedule. You can attend 1 class a day, everyday…or double up on days! 4. ILKB is such a supportive environment that you feel the sense of community. I wholeheartedly endorse a 5-star experience, and I highly recommend it to anyone and everyone looking to switch up their fitness routine. I love this place! ...read more

I joined the I love kickboxing San Jose family 6 weeks ago. I was not happy with myself at all for a while before giving this a shot. I went in for a trial class with a Groupon and signed up right away after my first class. I have not felt this alive and best decision I have made for myself in a long time. The coaches are amazing and they will definitely push you beyond your comfort zone, but don’t fret because the other members in the class will motivate you and keep you moving. We are one big happy and crazy family. Hope to see you there! ...read more

Can "toning shoes" really tone your legs??

"Toning shoes".  I see them on lots of feet around and I see the ads in some of my health and fitness related magazines.  These shoes are marketed as a great way to tone your lower body while you walk.  Perhaps this is the holy grail of getting shapely legs without doing anything more than walking the dog??? I'm kind of a skeptic about some things (and I'd put toning shoes in as one of those "things").  I've had my doubts about these toning shoes (plus I don't think they're all that attractive), but I've seen no real proof to back up my doubts.  Lo and behold, now there's proof! A recent study done at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse put the shoes to the test.  The research team designed the study to evaluate the exercise responses and muscle activation that takes place while walking with toning shoes versus traditional athletic shoes.  The test subjects were women aged 19-24. The toning shoes tested wereSkechers Shape-Ups, Masai Barefoot Technology, and Reebok's Easy Tone.  The "regular" athletic shoes tested wereNew Balancerunning shoes. All three toning shoes tested showed no statistically significant increase in either exercise response or muscle activation during treadmill walking trials.  There was no evidence to indicate the the toning shoes offeredanyenhanced benefits over traditional sneakers. Some consumers who have worn these shoes claim that they feel the shoes are working their muscles due to localized muscle soreness after wearing them the first few times.  Study researchers suggest that this feeling is due to the shoe's unstable sole design, which causes wearers to use slightly different muscles to maintain balance than they would while wearing traditional shoes (I'm not sure that's a good thing long term). So, if you're a woman who owns a pair of toning shoes, should you throw them out?  I'd say---" it depends".  If the shoes motivate you to get out and walk (and walking is all you do in them), they're probably okay unless you find they give you joint problems.  If you're one of my exercisers in myfitness boot camps in San Jose, Campbell or Los Gatos, I'd ask you to leave them at home.  Not because they don't do what they advertise, but because  they're designed for forward movement, NOT for lateral movement or higher impact activities. We move in all directions in our workouts, and I'd be afraid you'd trip over your feet! So, as always, buyer beware.  Just because the ads TELL you a product does something for you doesn't mean it really does. We absolutely need to exercise in order to stay fit , maintain our muscle mass and to maintain or lose weight, but we don't need toning shoes to tone our legs.  A good pair of traditional athletic shoes (I like theBrooks Ariel) and some great lower body exercises are what we really need! Are you a "toning shoe" wearer?  What's your experience with them?  Not a toning shoe wearer?  What shoe works best for your workouts?  Leave a comment and let's talk shoes! Boot Camp in San Jose Shows You How to Get More Results in Less Time!

It seems everybody is crazy busy these days.  It's no wonder that many people say the one reason they don't exercise is because they don't have time.   We're helping people crush that  "I have no time" excuse at our fitness boot camps in San Jose, Los Gatos and Campbell.  We're showing people how to maximize every minute in their workouts and get MORE results in LESS time than "traditional" workouts at the gym. Many people still hang on to the notion that you need to do hours of cardio workouts every week on top of hours of weight lifting at the gym in order lose weight and be fit. Nope.  Recent research proves otherwise.  Recent studies have found that "metabolic" training, or combining strength and cardiovascular exercises together in a circuit format, are very effective for fat loss.  Studies have also found that interval training (combining periods of high intensity exercise with segments of lower intensity exercise), is very effective for fat loss and muscle preservation.  The cool thing about these types of workouts is that they're typically SHORTER workouts than the traditional gym workout during which a person does a cardio workout for 30-60 minutes followed by a strength training workout for another 30-45 minutes.  I'm "Crazy Busy" just like everyone else in Silicon Valley.  If I can work out and get the results I want in LESS time, I'm all for it! What does a "metabolic" workout look like?  Well, the sky is the limit, but here are a couple of examples from some of our recent workout: At our boot camp in Downtown San Jose we created of circuit of jump  squats, push ups, hopping through an agility ladder, standing rows and alternating lunges.  We did the exercises at each station for 50 seconds, took a rest for 10 seconds, and the moved on to the next station.  We did this circuit for three rounds. This workout developed upper and lower body strength, lower body power and cardiovascular fitness--in a FRACTION of the time of a typical workout at the gym.   Next week at our evening boot camp in Los Gatos, we'll put our campers through an obstacle course during which they'll lunge, jump, push things, pull things, and step up on things while they move around the outdoor campus we use.  It's a full body workout that combines strength work, cardiovascular conditioning and includes functional movements (squatting, stepping, pulling, pushing) that we do as humans in every day life.  This type of a workout burns massive calories, boosts our metabolism for hours after the workout and helps us perform and move better on a daily basis. Aside from the physical benefits that interval training affords us, creating the variety that we do in all our boot camps in the Bay Area keeps the FUN in fitness.   If you're looking to spice up your workouts and really work your body, try a lifeSport Fitness boot camp in San Jose, Los Gatos or Campbell today! Not sure if boot camp is for you?  To request  a FREE one-week trial, please log on to:  http://www.lifesportbootcamp.com Committed to your fitness success, Becky Williamson, M.S.
