What to understand sending flowers and avoiding the middleman

How do you know if you are using a middleman when you are about to send flowers? Good question...if your florist asks for a "wire fee" they are probably a true florist, but not in the city where your delivery is going. If they ask for a "delivery fee" then you are more than likely talking to a true florist in that city where the flowers are being delivered. On the other hand If you are paying a "service fee" then this could be a red flag that you are calling a "middleman". If asked to pay a "service fee" or a "convenience fee" of any kind when ordering flowers be careful. Traditional florists wire out orders, but do so with diligence and the knowledge of their profession...they know what price to get for the city the item is going to (LA, Chicago, NY cities are more expensive) and they will ask for a second choice. A real florist knows what is available seasonally and will set a proper expectation for you so you know what the recipient will receive is doable. An order gatherer does not deal with flowers so they do not know what is in season anymore than their web guy knows. After all, an order gatherer is in a cubicle with a headset answering phones for ads placed in phone books nation wide with predictable flower shop town names like: Main St. Floral, USA Flowers, Flowers Sent Today, Your Town Flowers, Downtown Flowers, City Flowers, University Flowers, and other names legitimate sounding for the area. So the operator is capable of taking an order, but is not an expert on flowers, designing flowers or sending flowers. Understand, "order gatherers" or middlemen only send orders to florists they do not design or deliver flowers themselves.  It is worth the time to find a local florist in the city your flowers are going and can save you money.  Ultimately, a true florist will do a better job for you in the end no matter how much you spend. ...read more
