ADVICE ON JOB LOSS

If you recently lost your job or believe that your job is at risk, here are a couple of steps that you may want to take. Some of these suggestions have tax consequences. Make sure you understand the potential tax consequences of each.     * Conserve cash. If you’re paying more than the required payment on your mortgage and credit cards, pay only the required amount and conserve cash for living expenses.Assess your financial situation. Review your assets to determine the best sources to tap for your cash needs. Set up a plan for which assets you will use first and in what order if your employment is lengthy.Consider purchasing medical insurance outside of COBRA. You might find a better deal.Obtain a home equity line of credit. If you think you might lose your job, it is easier to get this type of loan while you are still employed. You do not have to pay interest unless you draw on the line. Interest rates on this type of loan are around 4% and usually float with the Prime Rate.     * Contact your mortgage lender and credit card companies before you start to fall behind. Explain your situation and ask them to work with you. Banks may modify loans (ex. reduce the interest rate), and credit card companies may forgive part of your debt or reduce your interest rate. This will affect your credit record making obtaining future loans that much more expensive.     * Remember that cash is king! Make sure you know where you can access cash (through savings, borrowings, selling assets, etc.) in the event of a job loss. ...read more

ESTIMATED INCOME TAX PAYMENTS

For those individuals who have to make estimated income tax payments, the fourth quarter installment is due January 15, 2009. If you itemize your deductions, consider making your state estimated tax payment on or before December 31, 2008, even though it is not due until January 15, 2009. You are allowed to deduct your state tax payments on your federal return in the year that you make your payment. By paying in 2008, you may deduct these taxes on your 2008 return. If you pay after December 31, you will have to wait until you file your 2009 return before you can take this deduction...that’s a year later. To avoid late payment penalties, individuals are required to pay in the lesser of: (1) 100% of the prior year’s taxes (line 63 on your 2007 Form 1040), or (2) 90% of the current year’s taxes. If your Adjusted Gross Income in 2007 was greater than $150,000 ($75,000 if married filing separately), then you must pay in 110% of your 2007 taxes rather than 100%. Where there is an income tax, the just man will pay more and the unjust less on the same amount of income. - Plato ...read more
