I was visiting my brother for a week in San Francisco. I damaged a tooth playing football with my nephew and was in a lot of pain. Dr. Amini is my brother’s dentist, so he called their office and they gave me an appointment to go see the doctor the following morning. Dr. Amini was great, and did everything possible to help with the pain and the damaged tooth. The good thing was all I needed was a dental crown, and they have a machine in their office that makes the crown right then and there. So I went to their office with a damaged tooth and came back with a crown and a fully functioning tooth. Great dentist, excellent job. ...read more

One of the last things you want to hear when you go to the dentist is that you have a cavity. At my last dental checkup, I found out I had two cavities, so I needed two fillings. Dr. Amini explained everything about getting a cavity and told me all about the different filling materials I could choose from. Everyone at Dr. Amini’s office was beyond nice. I hope I won’t need another cavity filled, but visiting Dr. Amini was a real pleasure. ...read more

San Francisco Invisalign Provider Examines Conscious Sedation

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA - A hefty percentage of patients experience needless anxiety when going to the dentist. Getting into the dental chair can be intimidating, especially if a patient hasn't gone in awhile. Logically, patients are aware that there's no cause for anxiety, but certain irrational fears can get the best of them. Those that experience considerable anxiety at the dentist have been known to delay or avoid dental work due to their fears. But there's one less worry about pain, discomfort or your own fears. San Francisco Invisalign provider Dr. Greg Larson offers patients a safe, comfortable reply to their dental fears at the pain free dentistry: conscious sedation. Larson is one of the dentists in San Francisco who was certified at the Dental Organization for Continuing Sedation Education. Common Dental Phobias Many are nervous about going to the dentist, and they may not be able to identify the cause of their fear. It's common to feel anxious about a visit to the dentist's office, despite there being anything to rationally fear. DOCS Education found that about 20 percent of patients experience some fear of the dentist. Clients may fear a certain feeling, procedure or dental tool. It is very common for patients to fear having hygienists clean their teeth. Some patients fear gagging or choking on the dental tools or materials. Some are apprehensive about the drill. People consulting a dentist about veneers or Invisalign invisible retainers may have problems with X-rays or gooey molds. Patients may be afraid of the lasers used during teeth whitening procedures. The mouth can be a very sensitive and private part of the body. Some patients fear the necessary intrusiveness that dentistry requires. What is Conscious Sedation? Conscious sedation helps patients unwind and it diminishes pain while patients remain awake and aware. Patients won't be frightened by the noise from the drill, and won't experience pain. Other sedation medications can be used during the appointment. Consult with a doctor about which medication he or she will use. The medication is taken orally. Be sure to follow the doctor's instructions for the day before, it may require to stop eating before a certain time of day. Doctors and nurses closely observe the patient during the appointment to make sure that the medication is working properly. Conscious sedation helps nervous patients relax and it gives the dentist the opportunity to work more efficiently. A dentist can conduct multiple procedures in one appointment, rather than continuing the treatment over several different days. After Your Appointment Sedation slows the motor skills and places patients in a deep state of relaxation. Patients must have a friend or family member drive him or her to and from his or her appointment. It is also best to keep someone at bay until they've regained fully coherence. Be sure to take it easy the rest of the day and take medications as prescribed. Patients may think that time has passed swiftly and memory of the dental procedures may be foggy. Patients should be capable of resuming normal activities the following day. Patients may not feel like eating a big meal, so having light snack foods handy, such as crackers and toast is best. Keep pushing plenty of fluids, and stay away alcohol. Honestly discuss fears with a dentist. A dentist will take your concerns seriously. Sedation can help ease anxiety, and it can help the dentist more efficiently procedures, reducing the time he or she spends working on teeth. Don't hesitate asking questions about treatment and sedation, because awareness all the facts can help patients prepare for an appointment physically and mentally. The benefits of Invisalign

You may have heard an advertisement for this product or seen a friend or co-worker wearing the clear trays. Many patients who come into my dental office are interested in this product to help straighten their teeth.   The most common scenario is a patient who had braces in middle school or high school but lost or stopped wearing the retainer sometime in college. Now this person is between the ages of 25-35 years of age and the lower front teeth have relapsed back into a crowded position. The posterior teeth are usually still in an ideal biting position so the great news is that by using Invisalign, the crowding in the front can often be straightened. The second most common scenario is where a person has never had braces, has relatively ideal occlusion, but he/she has one or two teeth in the front of his/her smile that is crooked/out of place. This is also a relatively straight forward case to treat with Invisalign For the more complicated cases, Invisalign has evolved/progressed many new techniques and is now able to treat the more complex smiles, although it may require a slightly longer treatment plan. Invisalign is not just an esthetic technology, it can be used to achieve and maintain oral health. For example, if a patient's lower front teeth are moderately crowded, it may be difficult to clean between those spaces, meanwhile food, plaque and bacteria can accumulate under the gums and between the teeth. If this area is not cleaned out regularly, a patient can develop gum disease or periodontitis. Although the exact mechanisms are unclear, studies have shown an association between periodontitis and coronary artery disease. Here's the link for more info on this topic:http://www.perio.org/consumer/coronary-disease.htm The benefits of having straight teeth can help not only your confidence by improving the esthetics of your smile but it can also help prevent future dental treatment by aligning your teeth into a healthier position.  The positives of Invisalign is that this product offers patients a way to straighten their teeth without metal wires and metal braces, which is helpful for people who are in the work force and need to look presentable. Although we recommend wearing the trays for 22 hours a day, for special events like weddings or presentations, one can take out the Invisalign trays, where as with braces, the brackets and wires are permanently fixed in place. The big negative to the Invisalign system is the cost, not because the dentist is trying to make big bucks off you but the actual cost of the Invisalign system is expensive. The cost may be similar to getting braces.
