For a watercolor painter or artists, flowers such as chrysanthemums come as natural choices. The ability to add bright and usually vibrant colors to a flower such as this are undeniable for a watercolor painter. The following lesson deals with the Chinese flower painting technique that allows for maximum creativity and spontaneity. The painting technique allows the artists to create accidents or uncanny mistakes and enjoy the randomness while painting in a controlled fashion. The technique involves blowing the paint and using bare fingers to move things around. It also involves letting the paint simply flow down a sheet of paper and painting with both hands (ambidextrous) for the most stunning effects. The Chinese were the first to record the use of the flower chrysanthemum. A very common variety of shrub found in the region and the flower was initially used as a medicinal herb. The Chinese have written about the use of this plant back to the 15th century, a part of the quad group of gentlemen of Chinese painting and artworks. Besides chrysanthemum, the other gentlemen in this category include the blossom, plum and bamboo. The flower was referred to in many traditional folk songs and artistic depictions from the time of the Song Dynasty in China in the 10th century. You may need some special materials and mastering the specific technique could take a while, but it is doable. Here is how. Materials you’ll need A lot of the following materials can be bought from the most popular painting retail stores. Rice or shaun paper 4 Chinese brushes from the smallest size to the largest A bottle of Sumi or Chinese painting ink A set of Chinese painting colors (most come in sets of 12) Round and flat brushes in the 1 to 8 and ½ ranges Cold press watercolor paper and a large pallette A light colored masking fluid such as the ones by Richson Mediums, Shiva Liquid Masque Preparation To complete a painting, you’ll need about 6 or 7 teaspoons of liquid color. For the color, you have to separate out the primary colors in three different bowls and dilute them with water till they are medium in tone. Steps Step 1: Use a pencil on the watercolor paper to draw out the composition. Make sure you have masking tape to keep the paper firmly on the board. Step 2: After that you can pour out yellow and red mixes on the edges of the paper and blow air from your mouth to spread them out in the pattern of flowers. Step 3: You must be careful not to mix the liquids together. This sort of mixing will lead to terrible color combinations. You can use a finger to smudge together the blue and yellow colors on the paper. Step 4: At this point you can add the large brush and use your fingers with any other colors you like. Make the painting look good and simple. Avoid mixing too many colors together. Step 5: To paint around the flowers you need a deep blue and for this deep blue you’ll have to mix the blue and red pigments on the paper with a large brush while they are still wet. Step 6: Wait till the whole painting is dry enough for you to lift the mask off the flowers with masking tape.
