The DOs and DON’Ts if You’re in a Car Accident

The moments after a car accident can be overwhelming, even in minor incidences. There’s important actions to take and ones to avoid directly proceeding the accident. We’ve put a list together of some DOs and DON’Ts on ways to protect yourself and help your case if you’re in an auto accident. DOsDo make sure that all parties are okay. Immediately call for medical help if someone is injured.Do call the police. They will document the accident and gather the necessary facts for and? legal purposes.Do report the accident to your insurance agent as soon as possible.Do exchange information with the other parties involved. Information to gather would include: Name, address, phone numbers, license plate number; make, model and year of vehicle; driver’s insurance information, car registration number and driver’s license number.Do get the names, addresses and phone numbers of any witnesses. Please note: Passengers involved in the accident are NOT witnesses.Do take pictures of the accident, damage to the vehicle and the area around the accident.Do collect any physical evidence that could have caused the accident.Do take notes of the accident: draw a diagram, note date and time, weather conditions, location, etc.Do call an attorney.DON’TsDon’t panic.Don’t leave the scene of the accidentDon’t apologize or blame anyone, including yourself.Don’t wait – The longer you wait to seek legal advice, the harder it is to prove your case.Don’t speak to anyone from the other party’s insurance company without first consulting a lawyer.
