A large part of the reason for such a high mortality rate is because a victim’s chance of survival decreases by 7-10% with each passing minute without CPR and/or defibrillation. When defibrillation is provided within 5-7 minutes, the survival rate increases by 35-40%. The average response time, or arrest to defibrillator time in the U.S. is 9 minutes. Knowing that statistically, 60% of all “in the field” cardiac arrests are witnessed, one can see that bystander CPR and AED usage is paramount in successful resuscitation. Some may ask if these statistics are applicable to you? Or, are AEDs and professional CPR training worthwhile? Personally, I believe everyone should be certified in CPR and whenever possible equipped with AEDs.
