Jazz Mafia Concert on 12/3 at Craneway Pavilion

JAZZ MAFIA PERFORM HIP-HOP SYMPHONY "BRASS, BOWS&BEATS" AT THE CRANEWAY PAVILION IN RICHMOND, CA ON DECEMBER 3, 2010 DEBUTING MATERIAL FROM NEW SYMPHONY OAKLAND, CA- The Jazz Mafia—an intricately woven collective of jazz virtuosos, top MCs, singers, arrangers, and composers that include many of the Bay Area's most innovative and prolific musical forces—will perform their critically acclaimed 45 piece hip-hop symphony "Brass, Bows & Beats" at the beautiful Craneway Pavilion in Richmond, CA on December 3rd. This show marks as a celebration of the Jazz Mafia's 10 year anniversary, and their break-through summer tour where they performed "Brass, Bows & Beats" in front of thousands at major festivals nationwide including the Montreal Jazz Festival, Newport Jazz Festival, Playboy Jazz Festival at the Hollywood Bowl, and the Monterey Jazz Festival. This will also be the last "Brass, Bows & Beats" show for a while, as the Jazz Mafia is currently working on their new symphony. Excerpts from the new symphony, which features multi-instrumentalists, will be debuted for the first time at the Craneway Pavilion on December 3rd. "Brass, Bows & Beats" is a genre-defying, multi-thematic, and community-oriented work that ecstatically embraces and fearlessly expands on jazz tradition. Jazz Mafia's 2010 tour brought this borderless tour de force—by principal composer, arranger, and conductor Adam Theis—outside the Bay Area for the first time. The group's bold and interactive creativity and stage presence, which have made them a West coast phenomenon, has captivated audiences across the continent this summer. Rick Marianetti, reviewing "Brass, Bows & Beats" for the San Francisco Examiner, wrote that the monumental symphony is, "one of the most exciting new works of American music in years—a seamless fusion of jazz, funk, hip-hop, electronica and digital turntable that deserves to be heard worldwide." Bohemian.com's Gabe Meline wrote that it is, "on par with Miles Davis and Gil Evans' Live at Carnegie Hall or Charles Mingus' Epitaph—visionary in scope, staggering in depth." The Jazz Mafia is bravado post-modern orchestration, blistering solos, spoken-word, Latin poly-rhythms, boom-bap rhymes, and emotive ballads, all spun together with the spirit of improvisational Jazz—but also masterfully adhering to symphonic structural elements. The 60-piece incarnation of Jazz Mafia that came together last year for two sold-out performances of "Brass, Bows & Beats" at San Francisco's Palace of Fine Arts was recorded for a live album and released June 8th, 2010 on Jazz Mafia Recordings.
