American Kenpo Karate

5.0

By MaryC

American Kenpo Karate is an amazing Karate studio! The best in the San Marino/Pasadena area. For children, it is developmentally appropriate and the curriculum is clear and well taught. My two children have grown immensely in their confidence, discipline, and technical skill as martial artists. It is truly a wonderful and transformative environment. It is so great, that I joined as well!! The studio offers a wide array of classes for a variety of ages. It is also one of the most ethical, inclusive, and socially healthy Karate studios. ...read more

UFC Fantasies Fading...

Many people are loosing their interest in the UFC type martial arts as a training system for self-defense. More and more people are realizing that this type of sport competition requires far too much time spent in the gym pumping iron.  There will always be fans who want to watch competitions and there will likely be a core group of die-hards that can't give up on the adrenaline fix of fighting for sport, but many people are turning away from these types of martial arts for real self-defense needs.   UFC and similar sports use weight categories because their systems are based on overpowering your opponents with strength.  The problem with this is that there will always be someone faster and stronger than you, especially the older you get.  There are no weight categories on the street and criminals will not fight according to a set of rules.  And most criminals use weapons. Sport competitions always favor the larger stronger practitioners, and this is the case in Japan as well.  UFC is very similar to Sumo when you consider them martial sports with rules that are in favor of the bigger and stronger contestants.  The rules in UFC and Sumo are different, but the rules foster training methods that are quite similar: get bigger and stronger than your opponent.     More and more former students of sport martial arts are turning to older martial arts to gain skills that do not require being stronger or faster than opponents.  The samurai and ninja did not need to be larger than their opponents, and they developed skills over hundreds of years that worked on the most dangerous battlefields.  Don't get caught in the trap of sport martial arts.  Many people eventually are unable to keep up with the intense fitness training required and usually either quit martial arts entirely or are forced to find something more suitable.  Something that they can train in for the rest of their lives.  Samurai and ninja martial arts are sophisticated systems that are designed to be usable for the entire lifetime of the practitioner.   If you are new to martial arts and are not sure which one to choose, or if you find yourself re-evaluating the path you have already chosen in martial arts, I suggest that you look again at the old martial traditions of the samurai and the ninja.   Ninpo Ikkan!
