With Holiday Guests Spills Happen

By Wendy Rasberry Designs to the Nines With most spills, time is of the essence. No carpet is fully stainproof. The longer the spill sits on the fibers, the more chance it has to penetrate and leave a stain.  Follow these general guidelines to prevent carpet blemishes whenever you have a mishap.  ·    Scoop up as much of the spill as possible, with a towel or a spoon.      ·    Blot the spot, don't rub or scrub. Gently press clean cloths into the stained area to             remove moisture. Scrubbing can damage the fiber and set the stain into the carpet.      ·    Apply warm, not hot, water to the stained area and blot until the stain stops transferring to the cloth.      ·    If you can still see the stain, make a Detergent Solution by adding 1/4 teaspoon dishwashing liquid to one cup warm water. Don't use too much soap, because it's difficult to rinse out of the carpet.      ·    Apply the detergent solution, let sit five minutes, then rinse with clear warm water. Repeat until all the detergent is removed.      ·    Place layers of white paper towels on the spill to absorb the liquid. Weight down the towels with a non-staining glass or ceramic object. You can let them sit overnight.       ·    When the carpet is dry, vacuum to restore the texture.      ·    If you can see the stain after all this, repeat steps 3 through 7. It means the stain             penetrated deep into the pile and has wicked up to the surface. ...read more

Selecting Hardwood Flooring

By Gary Rasberry When choosing hardwood flooring, you must decide between solid or engineered construction. Solid, like it sounds, is milled from a single ¾" thick pieces of hardwood. Because of its thickness, a solid hardwood floor can be sanded and refinished over several generations of use. One of the characteristics of solid wood flooring is that it expands and contracts with changes in your home's humidity. Normally, installers compensate for this movement by leaving an expansion gap between the floor and the wall. Base molding or quarter round is traditionally used to hide the extra space. Many factors define to look of natural hardwood flooring; species of the tree, where it grew, rate of growth, part of the tree used, all determine the floor's unique "character marks". The closer the plank is cut to the center of the tree, the darker its overall tone. Lighter boards come from closer to the bark. Knots indicate that a limb grew from that spot. Growth rings, determined by climate trends and mineral/nutrient absorption, determine grain pattern. While all these "character marks" impact the appearance of finished boards, they do not affect their strength. Engineered wood flooring is produced with three to five layers of hardwood. Each layer is stacked in a cross-grain configuration and bonded together under heat and pressure. As a result, engineered wood flooring is less likely to be affected by changes in humidity and can be installed at all levels of your home.  Before deciding on solid or engineered hardwood flooring your should consider these factors. The location of your hardwood flooring falls into three basic categories: on grade, at ground level; below grade, such as sunken living rooms or basements; above grade, any second level or higher. Traditional solid hardwood flooring is not well suited for high moisture areas such as bathrooms or below grade installation. The construction of an engineered hardwood gives it enhanced structural stability and moisture resistance that allows it to be installed at any grade level. If you plan to install over concrete, you must use an engineered product to ensure structural integrity. Solid wood flooring or engineered flooring may be used over plywood, wood or OSB subfloors. .  ...read more

New Year – New Window Treatments

by Wendy Rasberry Each window treatment design plays a crucial role in setting the stage for the theme, the look, and the style of the entire room. Window treatments may be handled in three basic ways. As part of the background, as supportive of the theme, or as a focal point. Obviously, the window with no treatment at all falls into the category of part of the background. So do many hard and soft treatments of metal, wood, and fabric. Such treatments attract no attention on their own, though they are pleasing to view if no one happens to look at them. They usually will be similar in color and texture to the walls. They may seem almost part of the wall and act as a subtle backdrop for the room's furnishings. Treatments architecturally or decoratively supportive will carry out a theme. Although not demanding attention, the window covering will make a stylistic statement. The treatment may unify a room, make it more cozy and inviting, or perhaps visually close in the space. Supportive treatments add interest and variety in color, texture and pattern. Unless a room is large and divided into various furniture groupings, a general rule of thumb is to have one focal point per room. If, for example a 14 X 20 foot living room contains a lovely fireplace wall, it may be unwise to compete with this built-in permanent focal point by decorating a window on another wall with an elaborate treatment. The crucial consideration is the effect the focal point will have on the room's occupants. People who are seated facing an ornately draped wall may be impressed initially, but they may find that the treatment is  unable to sustain their interest for long. A wall artwork may be a better choice for a focal point. A window treatment is an effective focal point when it is part of a natural architectural focus, such as the framing of an elaborate window. It is not a good choice when the focal point lies beyond the window. The long term power of understatement is far greater than the short  term value of overstatement. ...read more
