Benefits of eating Ofada rice
Ofada rice is a local specie of popular RICE known in botanical circles as Oryza Sativa. Ofada rice has grown in culinary prominence over the years, even far beyond the shores of Nigeria. It is also consumed in the US, Canada and the UK. Ofada rice has carved a niche for itself. A meal of this short grain, stout, brown or white rice has become a status symbol and mark of cultural pride, given the nature of its preparation and the unique sauce with which it is usually served. Nigeria currently consumes about 5.5 million metric tonnes of polished white rice yearly. Only 3.6 million tonnes of these grains are produced locally. This implies that the nation imports 1.9 million metric tonnes yearly. New research, published in the British Medical Journal, has found high-consumption of white rice to be associated with increased risk of type 2 diabetes. The increase in risk was especially noted among Asian populations. The study wasn̢۪t clear on just why white rice may impact diabetes risk, but as Time.com notes, it may have to do with its high score on the glycemic index (GI), meaning it could cause spikes in blood sugar. ...read more
